Former President Donald J. Trump’s angry reaction to his latest indictment this week was a racist dog whistle or, as a former aide during his administration turned media pundit put it, a racist “bullhorn” for his choice of words.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, who since leaving the White House has landed jobs as a CNN analyst along with the role of the conservative punching bag on ABC’s “The View,” opined that her former boss’s use of the term “riggers” in referring to those whom he accuses of manipulating the 2020 election is a racially charged appeal to the darkest instincts of his supporters who the media has spent years smearing as white nationalists and worse.
On Wednesday’s edition of “The Lead,” Griffin and anchor Kaitlan Collins joined Jake Tapper where they implied that Trump’s use of the peculiar term was coded language intended to intimidate prospective jurors who will be plucked from a predominantly black pool to hear the racketeering case brought against him and his co-defendants by black Fulton County DA Fani Willis.

“A word that I’m not particularly familiar with, riggers,” Tapper said as he cited the take on Trump’s Truth Social post from Keith Boykin, a former Clinton White House aide, and commentator with a history of accusing the former president of anti-black leanings, and who did so again over his use of the term.
After Collins, who Trump made a fool of during CNN’s town hall from New Hampshire in May, suggested that Trump’s social media activity could potentially lead to his being gagged by the judges in the case, Griffin took the floor to imply that her ex-boss is a racist.
“What do you make of the racial accusation Keith Boykin was making there, that the use of the word ‘rigger’ is not unintentional?” Tapper asked. “President Trump has certainly been accused of racist language before.”
‘Right,” Griffin responded, “With Trump, you don’t need to look for a dog whistle, it’s a bullhorn when it comes to race and I do think that’s deliberate.”
“We’ve seen the, I mean, slanderous attacks that he’s put out against Fani Willis,” she continued. “You know, alleging things I won’t even repeat, so he’s not really hiding that he’s going to lean into that element and this is, you know, taking place just outside of Atlanta. When you saw the courtroom, it was a lot of black men and women who were serving in that courtroom. The fact that he’s introducing race into this prosecution surprises me, it’s disgusting, it’s textbook Donald Trump, but it comes as no surprise.”

“A Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable REPORT on the Presidential Election Fraud which took place in Georgia is almost complete & will be presented by me at a major News Conference at 11:00 A.M. on Monday of next week in Bedminster, New Jersey. Based on the results of this CONCLUSIVE Report, all charges should be dropped against me & others – There will be a complete EXONERATION! They never went after those that Rigged the Election. They only went after those that fought to find the RIGGERS!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday as he announced the upcoming release of a report that will exonerate him of the charges brought by the politically ambitious Willis.
“Trump’s been president for almost four years now and he’s never made a single visit to a black community to attend a black event,” Boykin told former CNN host Don Lemon in 2020. “How the hell do you say you’re making a serious effort to reach black people when you haven’t even gone to a black community? For God’s sake, he hasn’t even gone to the black community in Washington, D.C, he hasn’t gone to the black community in New York, in Harlem or in Brooklyn where he lived.”
“He has not made any serious effort to reach black people,” he said.
