A CNN correspondent said Thursday that Vice President Kamala Harris needs to be better prepared before her upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump.
CNN’s Abby Phillips made the recommendation while discussing Harris’ refusal, as previously reported, to respond to Trump’s complaint that, after years of only highlighting/celebrating her Indian ancestry, Harris is now embracing her black ancestry for votes.
During Harris’ interview earlier Thursday with CNN’s Dana Bash, she completely sidestepped a question about the complaint.
“Same old, tired playbook,” she said. “Next question, please.”
Listen:
This answer unnerved Phillips.
“Let’s not be mistaken,” she said. “I mean, Donald Trump is tall and very loud. And he is very persistent. It’s not going to be so easy to just say, okay, let’s move on. He’s going to be right there [during the debate].”
Exactly. Plus, Trump isn’t the only one who’s made the complaint. So has former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian man.
Appearing on Fox News around the start of the month, Ramaswamy noted that when Harris had risen to power in California, she’d done so by stressing her Indian ancestry. But now that she’s running for president, she’s leaning entirely into her black side.
“She leaned into it when she ran for office in California, big Asian American and Indian-American population,” he said. “So she wore that when it was convenient. She is wearing a different identity now when it’s politically convenient on a national stage.”

He added that this change in identity was offensive to Indians.
“On a very personal level, my parents were immigrants to this country, legal immigrants from southern India — the very same part of India that her mother also emigrated from,” Ramaswamy said.
“I think it’s a hard fact, whether you like it or not, that many Indian Americans in the United States are indeed somewhat offended by the way Kamala has suddenly cast aside the Indian-American side of her identity,” he added.
Dovetailing back to CNN, the panel discussion continued with the other panelists all rushing to Harris’ defense.
“If you know, the vice president is not very tall — she is a petite woman.,” CNN’s Ashley Allison said. “Let him [Trump] look like the bully. Let him throw out red meat and you rise above the occasion. That’s why I think it was so important that she didn’t answer the question about race because actually that behavior is below the office.”
No, actually, it’s not below the office to question Harris’ chameleonic identity.
“I think she answered the right way,” CNN’s David Alexrod added. “But there was another element to it that I think in a debate is going to be very important. That behavior of Donald Trump’s really does raise the question, do you want this for the next four years or do you want someone who’s focused on your problems? And I think that pivot works.”
Trump isn’t “focused” on Harris’ identity. It’s just a point he made one time several weeks ago.

Phillips better watch out because leftists may soon come after her like they’re now coming after Politico, which, as previously reported, is facing backlash for publishing an honest headline about Harris’ evasion.
When Politico, to its credit, decided to publish a story about her dismissing the identity question, it rightly titled the story as follows: “‘Next question’: Harris evades questions about her identity.”
And BOOM, just like that, the radicalized left snapped like a twig because how dare the corporate propaganda press ever, ever, ever, ever do its actual job and portray a dear Democrat accurately and factually.
Look at some of the backlash below:
I will not continue to follow @politico – you are not reporting the news in an unbiased manner.
You must have learned how tomanipulate the news from FOX or directly from Trump and friends.https://t.co/WH1r8DzqFl— James Michael ☘️ A New Way Forward! (@J0396195894841) August 31, 2024
One of the worst headlines written in a long time, and that’s saying a lot, given the intense competition. Anyone at Politico involved in this headline should reconsider their future in journalism.

Throw “Politico” into the River Styx, please.
This is easily the most bad faith, disgusting, dishonest headline I have seen in years.
I realize you sacks of shit have a CEO who literally asked people to “pray” for Trump’s victory but this is atrocious. https://t.co/zEDW8Es6q2

I had to type delete and retype twice on this one. Such a horrible headline and, frankly, we need to talk about how we address the racism and sexism women of color face and stop making it a debate about how women of color behave when they try to be seen as leaders! https://t.co/BtTu1X7eBF

Omg. When someone showed this to me I wasn’t sure if it was real. “Evades questions about her identity?” What? This was refusing to dignify Trumps racist attack abt her ‘turning Black’. Whats wrong w you, @politico? I think you need to address your identity as journalists. https://t.co/LDh2GtHdFw
