Dave Portnoy’s “nutshell” on how the Democratic Party turned away young, white, male voters played out in real time as a reporter turned into the PC police.

Just as the founder of Barstool Sports isn’t shy about his support for President Donald Trump after reportedly voting for the Republican leader three times, Portnoy isn’t one to self-censor. Unsurprisingly, his take that Democrats have lost support for being “very anti-normal guys” was met with an immediate criticism from reporter Tony Dokoupil during a “CBS Sunday Morning” interview.
Leading up to the exchange, Dokoupil’s narration detailed that his guest had been raised in a “liberal Jewish home outside of Boston” and that he now runs a media company favored by those who’ve “turned away from Democrats and voted for Donald Trump.”
Seeking to understand the motivation that those formerly of the left had in shifting to the right, much like the coalition Trump had assembled for his 2024 presidential campaign that included Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, the reporter asked, “What happened to the Democrats? Why did they lose so many young men?”
“People often think I have the answer … My nutshell is, generally they were very anti-normal guys, like-” Portnoy explained as he was interrupted by Dokoupil, who asked, “What do you mean normal guys? Are you saying there’s only one way to be a guy?”
Ignoring the interjection that was delivered with a grin, the Barstool Sports founder continued, “If that girl’s hot, ‘Hey, that girl’s hot. I wanna drink, I wanna party, I like frat parties,’ that was all bad.”
“And to be honest, the white guy, and this sounds,” Portnoy went on with a pause before carrying on about the notion of privilege and other ideas leftists divisively affix to white people, “was the bad guy, became the bad guy. And there’s a lot of white dudes who are like, ‘Well, I’m not the bad guy. What are you getting mad at me for? I wasn’t here for colonialism or any of the stuff you guys are complaining about 200 years ago.”
Racist finger-pointing wasn’t all that he called Democrats out for, as he also pointed out that the party hadn’t won fans by calling Trump supporters deplorable or likening them to Nazis and extremists, as then-President Joe Biden had in his infamous 2022 Independence Hall speech framed in a blood red backdrop.
Routinely faced with antisemitic comments, including a recent display while filming one of his pizza reviews, Portnoy also addressed the need to speak out against things that shouldn’t be normalized: “It’s every day now. Like, there’s a definitive shift in what’s going on … for me, being a Jewish person, you got to step up. You’re kind of someone people look up to in the Jewish community. You have to be like, alright, this is not normal, haha with the guys.”
