Dems want DOJ to study mass shooters online content to ‘early identify’ potential shooters

There is a widely held view in America that the Covid-19 pandemic unleashed the possibilities of a police state and many on the left were all in on a totalitarian government controlling every aspect of our lives. All for our own good, of course.

In a more recent move by Democrats to address mass shootings, a group is proposing a measure that threatens to lead to sanctioned government agency surveilling social media posts — as it is, both the FBI and DHS hire private companies to conduct social media monitoring on their behalf, according to the Brennan Center.

U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., introduced a bill, the “Identifying Mass Shooters Act,” that says government officials should “collect, study, and analyze online content created by mass shooters in an effort to early identify potential mass shooters,” Fox News reported.

Mfume was joined by a small number of Democratic colleagues on legislation that would then take what was learned from the analysis of websites and social media platforms to “early identify” people who might become mass shooters, according to the network.

“Perpetrators of mass shootings have utilized various online channels to declare their intent to commit violence through manifestos, blog posts, social media posts, and direct messages prior to committing acts of terror,” the bill reads. “Inadequate oversight and accountability mechanisms on online platforms create an environment that enables hate speech, extremism, radicalization, and violence.”

It calls to mind a quote from C.S. Lewis who said omnipotent moral busybodies “who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

But then, who can oppose identifying potential mass murderers before they strike? Then again, Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

“The legislation does not go so far as to establish a new federal program that has officials scanning social media posts for certain words or content and investigating the people behind those posts,” Fox News reported. “But it does take a possible first step in that direction and notes that past mass shooters have a certain way of communicating that, if studied further, could provide clues as to who might become the next perpetrator of a mass casualty event.”

The bill calls for the Justice Department’s National Institute of Justice to study “content patterns used by mass shooters through online platforms and social media channels,” and report the findings to Congress, and include a review of the “linguistic patterns used by previous mass shooters collected by law enforcement officials.”

The greater concern here would center on reports of concerned parents being looked upon as “domestic terrorists” for speaking out at school board meetings about what their children are being exposed to and finding themselves under the scrutiny of the FBI. This occurring last year after the National School Boards Association sent President Biden a letter declaring “America’s public schools and its education leaders are under an immediate threat.”

The letter claimed that “extremist hate organizations” were showing up at school board meetings and that they should be characterized as “equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.”

Another concern may be the treatment of Jan. 6 protesters, many of whom remain in prison without trial nearly TWO YEARS later — effectively, being treated as political prisoners.
