DeSantis denounces black Democrats’ ‘absurd’ call to investigate Florida teaching standards

GOP Presidential hopeful Governor Ron DeSantis said he is the latest target of the left’s “weaponization of the federal government” against their political opponents after the Democratic Congressional Black Caucus announced it is investigating potential legal action against the state of Florida over its new black history curriculum.

“Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., said the caucus met with Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and has sent inquiries to the Department of Justice regarding the issue,” NewsNation reported on Thursday.

Gov. DeSantis denounced the push on Saturday in a post on Twitter.

“This is just the latest — and absurd — example of the weaponization of the federal government,” he stated. “Standing up to the lies of people like Kamala Harris is the right thing to do. We will defend Florida and stand firm against false, politically-driven narratives.”

“As President I will end the weaponization of government and hold partisan bureaucrats accountable for abusing their power,” he added.

As BizPac Review reported, Vice President Kamala Harris told black sorority members at the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority National Convention in Indianapolis that “in the State of Florida, they decided middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery.”

She then seized on her misrepresentation of the state’s black history curriculum to turn the issue into a smear campaign against DeSantis, who, after former President Donald Trump, presents the most serious challenge to President Joe Biden’s bid for a second term.

During a speech in Jacksonville, Florida, Harris again repeated her claim, throwing in yet another misrepresentation of Florida law for good measure.

“Extremists here in Florida passed a law, ‘Don’t Say Gay,’ trying to instill fear in our teachers that they should not live their full life and love who they love,” she stated. “And now, on top of all of that, they want to replace history with lies. Middle school students in Florida to be told that enslaved people benefited from slavery.”

Her allegation against Florida’s take on slavery stems from a single, out-of-context line picked from a 200+ page document.

Michigan State University professor emeritus Dr. William Allen, a member of the workgroup that helped to put together the new standards and a former chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, promptly blew the Vice President’s claim out of the water and accused Harris of intentionally lying to the American people.

“This curriculum is devoted to telling the truth,” Dr. Allen told Fox News host Jesse Watters, “whereas Kamala Harris has retailed a lie.”

“Now, it may only have been a falsehood the first time she stated it,” he added. “But when you repeat a falsehood, it becomes a lie.”

Allen pointed to the great black American orator, author, and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who was first taught to read by his slaveowner’s mistress.

“Such examples are numerous and they’re retelling the stories of people who suffered the indignity of slavery time and again,” he said.

“What this curriculum is about is having people who lived the experience, who lived the history, tell their stories,” he continued. “And nothing is more important than that we never, ever, erase the stories that the people who lived the stories tell. No one has a right to interpret, before first understanding the stories as the people who lived them understood them themselves.”

Prior to Harris’s arrival in Florida, DeSantis, too, called her a liar.

“Democrats like Kamala Harris have to lie about Florida’s educational standards to cover for their agenda of indoctrinating students and pushing sexual topics onto children,” he stated. “Florida stands in their way and we will continue to expose their agenda and their lies.”
