The Department of Homeland Security responded to celebrity chef José Andrés after he questioned the “truth” about alleged hunger strikes at a New Jersey immigration detention facility.
The World Central Kitchen founder asked in a post on X if DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin would join him on a tour of the Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark, where protesters have been demonstrating amid allegations of a hunger strike by detainees who complain about the meals being served.
“REMINDER: there is NO HUNGER STRIKE at Delaney Hall. There are no subprime conditions,” the DHS account on X posted. “ALL detainees are provided with 3 meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, toiletries, and opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers.”
“Aliens are also provided comprehensive healthcare — For many illegal aliens this is the BEST healthcare they have received their entire lives,” the post concluded.
Andrés shared a quote post of the DHS factcheck, asking, “Can you invite me to see with my own eyes what the truth is?”
Can you invite me to see with my own eyes what the truth is? Undocumented or not people deserve our respect….and their dignity….enforcing the laws of the land is great, but always treating people with humanity…@MarkwayneMullin let’s go see it together? https://t.co/dKq4qvwfZU

“Undocumented or not people deserve our respect….and their dignity….enforcing the laws of the land is great, but always treating people with humanity…” the chef continued, tagging Mullin and asking, “let’s go see it together?”
Social media users did not seem to appreciate the appeal by Andrés.
Hi @SecMullinDHS He’s implying that you’re lying. A weak strategy at best. Ignore.

How big is your ego that you think the federal government owes you a private tour of one of its facilities? GFY loser.

But DHS did respond, posting a copy of the facility’s menu that showed the food being served to detainees for their three meals a day.
“Chef, Chicken Fried Steak was on the menu for dinner last night,” the response to Andrés read.

While there were those on X who still found reason to bash the DHS, others called out the world-renowned chef for not providing meals himself.
Chef José Andrés has an estimated net worth of around $50 million.
So fucking deliver some meals to them yourself.

Pay no attention to this globalist puppet. He’s a lunatic leftist Democrat who never asked @BarackObama @JoeBiden if illegal aliens were treated with dignity and humanity while in custody during the 16 years they were in office.

Even on their way out, they are still eating better than many Americans.
Good riddance.— Christy (@CHRISTYUSA1776) June 3, 2026
The Chef became a US citizen in 2013ish along with his wife after living in US for over two decades.
NOW, he’s complaining about detainees that eat better than seniors, homeless, and most families.

Eating way better than our J6politicalhostages did when they were detained https://t.co/tHhHk0WTUP
