California Democrats once again appeared to side with heinous criminals as perpetuating soft-on-crime policies was given favor over protecting disabled children from rape.
“Disgusting. There’s no other word for it.”
In February, Republican California Assemblyman Devon Mathis, representing the state’s 33rd District, introduced AB-808 to amend the Penal Code and add greater punishment to criminals found guilty of raping minors suffering from mental, developmental or physical disability. After being referred to the Democrat-controlled Public Safety Committee, the bill failed to muster the majority vote required to advance out of committee.
Upon learning of that outcome, California Assembly Republicans reamed their Democratic colleagues on social media and wrote, “Public Safety Cmte Dems are opposing a bill to increase penalties for raping a disabled child, which can be as low as 3 years in prison. Earlier, they unanimously supported higher penalties for property crime (against wealth victims). Disgusting. There’s no other word for it.”

Throughout progressive strongholds, there have been repeated examples of prosecutors using their discretion to soften sentences for criminals. One such case occurred when Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón had permitted a 26-year-old man found guilty of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl and later accused of another incident involving a four-year-old, to serve his measly two-year sentence at a juvenile facility for girls.
Public Safety Committee Chairman Reggie Jones-Sawyer (D) of California’s 59th District defended the move to Fox News Digital and argued current “law contains penalties with nuanced approaches to sex offenses, depending on the circumstances, including developmental disabilities and age differences.”
“Rape of a developmentally disabled person is already punishable by up to eight years in state prison,” he said. “Increased penalties apply where the victim of rape is a child and force or fear is used.”
The Democrat said, “The act is punishable by up to 13 years in state prison if the child was under 14 years of age and by up to 11 years if the child was 14 years of age or older.”
He later contended, “The bill was broad, recategorizing non-violent crimes, and even misdemeanors, as violent felony acts,” and would go on to accuse, “This is another attempt to revive a version of the three-strikes mentality of mass incarceration, which was a failed policy. We need to look at ways to reform our criminal justice system while advocating for diversion and rehabilitative programs that end crime cycles of all categories.”
Meanwhile, this was only the latest instance of Democrats shooting down Republican efforts to hold criminals accountable as, in March, AB-229 was struck down by committee. The bill aimed to classify domestic violence, human trafficking and numerous sex offenses as violent crimes in the state of California, adding the first two and expanding the definition of sodomy, oral copulation, and sexual penetration to encompass the latter.
“I would definitely say so,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) asserted in her recent appearance on “60 Minutes” when host Lesley Stahl prompted, “The Democrats are a party of pedophiles.”
“They support grooming children,” the congresswoman added.
