Folks, including billionaire Elon Musk, have some thoughts about a lawsuit claiming Facebook and Instagram have enabled child sexual abuse.
The suit was filed this week against Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, a Democrat.
In a statement, Torrez accused the social media platforms of creating “prime locations for predators to trade child pornography and solicit minors for sex.”
Today, #NMAG Raúl Torrez moved to hold @Meta and Mark Zuckerberg accountable for promoting child pornography and facilitating human trafficking of minors instead of protecting New Mexico’s children.https://t.co/zqS3QEUWsN pic.twitter.com/xirh0ZkD79

“Mr. Zuckerberg and other Meta executives are aware of the serious harm their products can pose to young users, and yet they have failed to make sufficient changes to their platforms that would prevent the sexual exploitation of children,” Torrez said.
“Despite repeated assurances to Congress and the public that they can be trusted to police themselves, it is clear that Meta’s executives continue to prioritize engagement and ad revenue over the safety of the most vulnerable members of our society,” he added.
Torrez’s office obtained evidence proving as much by executing “an undercover investigation of Meta’s platforms” through the creation of “decoy accounts of children 14-years and younger,” according to a press release.
The investigation uncovered a slew of unsavory facts about the social media platforms.
For example, the platforms “[p]roactively served and directed the underage users [to] a stream of egregious, sexually explicit images — even when the child has expressed no interest in this content,” the press release states.
The platforms also “[e]nabled dozens of adults to find, contact, and press children into providing sexually explicit pictures of themselves or participate in pornographic videos,” “[r]ecommended that the children join unmoderated Facebook groups devoted to facilitating commercial sex,” and “[a]llowed … users to find, share, and sell an enormous volume of child pornography.”
And lastly, the platforms allegedly allowed a made-up mother to try to sell her 13-year-old daughter to sex traffickers.
Dovetailing back to Musk, he and others have taken interest in this suit because of what it says about Disney. For, you see, Disney advertises on Facebook and Instagram, despite the platforms allowing for child sexual abuse.
Indeed, Disney is reportedly currently running 300+ ads for Disneyland and Disney World on Facebook and Instagram:
NEW: New Mexico has sued Meta & Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly enabling child s*xual abuse material to be distributed.
Hey @RobertIger & other advertisers: Will you be suspending advertising on Facebook & Instagram like you did with X?

That’s a lot of money being used to support platforms that permit child sexual abuse, and Musk in particular doesn’t like that — especially given the recent decision by Disney boss Bob Iger to stop advertising on X.
As previously reported, Iger stopped advertising on X after Media Matters, a left-wing propaganda outlet, published a report dubiously claiming that Musk’s platform is a hotbed of rabid antisemitic hate.
The X boss was not pleased. In addition to filing a “thermonuclear lawsuit” against Media Matters, he also told advertisers like Iger’s Disney to go pound sand.
And now that he’s learned about Facebook and Instagram’s tacit allowance of child sexual abuse content, he’s especially angry at Disney (and others like them).
Look:
Bob Eiger thinks it’s cool to advertise next to child exploitation material. Real stand up guy. https://t.co/7uMr6o9QVC

Yeah, why do their Chief Marketing Officers endorse child trafficking!?
Let’s ask them. https://t.co/2XhZxNybDm

Why no advertiser boycott, Bob Eiger? You are endorsing this material! https://t.co/EVza5VZeSa

The point of his tweets was to highlight the hypocrisy of advertisers like Disney who jettison outlets like X because of smears by groups like Media Matters but have nothing to say about the legitimate charges against outlets like FB and Instagram.
Musk wasn’t alone in calling out Disney in particular. Many X fans also followed suit.
Look:
@Disney @Apple @IBM @paramountplus look like you like to advertise on child sexual abuse apps.

And yet @Disney advertises on those platforms without a peep of objection about that horrible situation. Hi Bob!

Weird that big advertisers haven’t made a big show of pulling advertisements from these platforms…

Yes most advertisers are ok with they, and not ok with
Almost like that is not the reason they don’t advertise here, almost like there is another reason that is more politically motivated

Waiting for @Disney to pull advertising from Meta…
Or maybe Disney likes child sexual abuse and trafficking? pic.twitter.com/pojX26lEyg
