Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon set the record straight on whether questioning election integrity sows “distrust” about the whole system.
She joined 60 Minutes host Leslie Stahl, who wondered whether going after noncitizens who vote in United States elections is harming public trust in the system, implying the number is so minuscule that it is a nearly pointless issue to tackle.
Watch:
“There are people who feel that the point is to sow distrust about the whole election system. There are very few people who are noncitizens who end up voting very few. Very few. And so therefore what’s the purpose?” 60 Minutes asks Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
“The point is actually the opposite of what you were saying. It’s not to sow distrust. The distrust is there,” says Dhillon. “And so all of these kinds of crimes are being prosecuted now for the first time really in volume.”
State audits have shown that noncitizen voting is extremely rare, though it does happen. https://t.co/j2tq385kj6

“The point is actually the opposite of what you were saying. It’s not to sow distrust. The distrust is there,” Dhillon responded. “And so all of these kinds of crimes are being prosecuted now for the first time really, in volume, and even the Biden administration prosecuted 13 people for noncitizen voting.”
“Thirteen people, I mean the numbers are tiny,” Stahl argued.
“So Leslie, we’ve been in office for less than two years, we’ve had investigations ongoing for over a year, and it takes time. There are literally thousands of them out there that we are looking at,” Dhillon explained.
One X user wasted no time in exposing the absurdity of Stahl’s argument:
My god, imagine using Leslie Stahl’s argument in any other facet of our justice system… “telling homicide detectives to stop investigating murders because murders account for a tiny percentage of all deaths. Investigating these crimes undermines public trust in the safety of our…

“My god, imagine using Leslie Stahl’s argument in any other facet of our justice system… ‘telling homicide detectives to stop investigating murders because murders account for a tiny percentage of all deaths. Investigating these crimes undermines public trust in the safety of our communities..’ its absolute clownery,” they wrote.
