Elderly Chicago homeowner shoots intruder in the chest during home invasion

An elderly Chicago man was badly injured during a brazen broad daylight home invasion, fighting off a pair of criminals who forced their way into his Northwest Side residence, shooting one in the chest during a violent scuffle with the intruders.

The action went down at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning in the city’s O’Hare neighborhood on the 8500 Block of West Catherine, an area near O’Hare International Airport where such incidents are rare, according to ABC7 Eyewitness News.

The 80-year-old homeowner responded to a knock on his door and was then thrust into a life-threatening situation when two individuals, a man and a woman, allegedly forced their way inside without permission and assaulted him.

During the struggle, the armed senior citizen produced a firearm and brought an end to the threat by opening fire on the invaders, hitting the male suspect in the chest, the female intruder was not injured, according to police as the duo then reportedly fled the premises after realizing that they had mixed it up with the wrong old man.

The homeowner, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the injuries suffered during the terrifying altercation, had a Firearms Owner’s Identification (FOID) card, allowing him to legally possess firearms and ammunition. He is in critical condition.

Both suspects are in custody after self-transporting to Resurrection Hospital where the male invader is in critical condition.

Residents of the neighborhood, which isn’t near the more violent areas of the Windy City where crime is rampant, expressed shock that Chicago has become so dangerous that no resident is safe anywhere in the sprawling Midwest metropolis.

“This doesn’t happen here. This is a pretty rare event,” Boris Stojakovic, a Chicagoan who manages a building across the street with his family told ABC7 Eyewitness News.

Another woman who lives on the block told the outlet, “I was in shock when I heard it, because it’s like in the middle of the day, in the morning, and something like that happens so close to your home, it’s really scary to hear.”

Resident Kenny Vierneisel who lives nearby, told CBS Chicago, “I’m glad that he protected himself. If someone breaks into my apartment, I’m going to do the same thing. Right?”

Violence has raged in Democrat-controlled cities since the 2020 George Floyd “summer of love” when race riots erupted across the nation after the death of the 46-year-old petty criminal and drug addict who met his demise while being arrested by Minneapolis police. and left-wing officials including Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot made excuses for those looting and burning cities while demonizing their own law enforcement professionals, emboldening criminals who have been running amok in the streets ever since.

According to Chicago Police Department statistics, crime is already up a stunning 61 percent in the first four weeks of the year over a similar period last year, a grim omen that 2023 is going to be another bloody year.

Despite the daily body count and businesses fleeing downtown Chicago in droves, Mayor Lightfoot has her priorities, pandering to prospective voters at her city’s Lunar New Year celebration over the weekend where she joyously danced to the beat of drums and cymbals in a wintry wonderland scene reminiscent of a snow globe, drawing harsh criticism from some residents.

“We have started to change Chicago around for the better,” said the Windy City’s historic first openly lesbian black mayor during a recent debate. “I want to finish the job that we have started.”

Lightfoot will face voters in next month’s mayoral election, the first referendum on her dismal tenure during which Chicago has become as deadly in many areas as a third-world country.
