A Connecticut town’s selection for treasurer as part of a sweep in upsets garnered the response, “Say Goodbye to that cash.”
In November, Democrats had made a big deal about victories in New Jersey, New York and Virginia as though the typically blue areas remaining blue somehow represented a referendum on President Donald Trump. Weeks after going unnoticed, the Hartford Courant highlighted the outcome of elections in the town of Durham, Connecticut, where a 22-year-old was given control of millions of dollars as the first Democrat treasurer since 1985.
“I want to bring the message that it is important for our generation to give back to the town that raised us and that our generation become involved in the communities we grew up in,” Thomas Peters had told the Courant. “Sometimes I feel like with everything going on in the nation, even a lot of young people feel stuck. The biggest difference you can make is the one that is closest to home.”
Citing state law, the outlet detailed that town treasurers “receive all money belonging to the town, pay it out on the order of the proper authority,” and keep records of all of it as revenue streams exceeded seven figures for the town.
Peters had scored his victory as the youngest treasurer by 27 votes over Republican Brett Eagleson, who had been appointed to the position in August after Wendy Manemeit had retired, according to the Courant. Manemeit’s tenure had lasted longer than the newly-elected treasurer has been alive, as she’d started in the role in 2001.
Reacting to the outcome of the election that saw 12 positions filled by Democrats, including roles on the Zoning Board of Appeals and Board of Finance, Town Clerk Nicole Charest had expressed, “We are a majority Republican town and we were expecting Republican results. In the past 10 years or so this was an upset in the category with Democrats getting a majority of the votes for most of our seats.”
The Courant detailed, “There are 1,328 Democrats, 1,736 Republicans and 2,298 unaffiliated voters in Durham,” and the results were perceived by some as reflective of economic outlooks, dissatisfaction with the area’s Board of Education, and issues with Washington, D.C. politics.
Providing further insight on Peters, The Daily Mail detailed that he wrote a thesis while attending Quinnipiac University that examined how municipal governments used funds from then-President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act.
Faced with criticisms on social media for his age and inexperience, the incoming treasurer contended to the Courant, “One thing from these social media groups is there is a lot of noise.”
“I try not to become involved in it and I don’t think it’s productive. It is kind of telling that whenever someone is trying to make a change, you are going to have a lot of backlash,” he argued. “There is going to be a current against you and you need to be able to move along and really don’t let anyone bring you down.”
However, it remained more likely that the backlash had less to do with Peters “trying to make a change,” and more to do with the reality that the professional experience of the Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy (D) endorsed young man detailed only one position in the private sector, with four months working for Panera Bread as a sandwich and salad maker.
As one user on X suggested regarding the prospects for Durham with Peters holding the purse strings, “Democrat…Grim. Say Goodbye to the cash,” while another simply stated, “Lunacy.”
Democrat…Grim.
