MSNBC columnist Michael Cohen attacked Gov. Ron DeSantis in a one-sided, partisan distortion of reality that would make Baghdad Bob proud, proving that when it comes to 2024, the Florida governor is feared by the left above all others.
Cohen’s over-the-top piece caught the attention of Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who offered a stinging take on what should befall those who permit permanent, life-altering medical treatment for gender-confused children — the Democrat-friendly network plugged the column in a tweet that read, “Ron DeSantis’ desperation for power is destroying an entire state.”
“Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis likes to call Florida the ‘citadel of freedom’ and the place ‘where woke goes to die.’ The reality is a policy agenda defined largely by pettiness, cruelty and a disturbing disregard for basic democratic norms,” Cohen wrote. “If states are the so-called laboratory of American democracy, then Florida is the meth lab of American democracy.”
Of course, the first problem with that assessment is the US Census Bureau named Florida the fastest-growing state in the country in December.
Cohen takes exception to a number of DeSantis policy initiatives, including the governor objecting to Disney vowing to work to get rid of a Parental Rights law that banned sexual instruction in K-3 grades, pulling books filled with sexually inappropriate content from school libraries, banning critical race theory in universities and ending discriminatory diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. More recent actions include signing legislation allowing gun owners to carry a concealed firearm without a permit and a six-week abortion ban
Last fall, under Gov. DeSantis, the Florida Board of Medicine and the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine also approved rules prohibiting gender-affirming surgery and puberty-blocking hormones for minors, and Musk responded to a tweet that referenced this action.
“Any parent or doctor who sterilizes a child before they are a consenting adult should go to prison for life,” Musk tweeted.

And while some on the left may take exception to Musk’s opinion, he had plenty of people agreeing with him. People such as Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
Why is this a controversial statement? https://t.co/oWahydNcja

I agree.
That’s why I introduced the Protect Children’s Innocence Act that makes it a felony to perform gender affirming care on children under the age of 18. https://t.co/R3PhnqWko8— Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (@RepMTG) April 14, 2023

No patient (child/guardian or adult) can truly give informed consent to radical mutilating procedures and experimental hormone treatments promoted by transgender extremists. That these procedures may be allowed by law or medical bodies is an urgent failure that must be addressed.

I was a tomboy as a kid. Worked on cars with my dad, liked to climb trees and wear boys shirts because they were comfortable. Kind of terrifying that my left leaning mom would have possibly taken it as me wanting to be a boy today. I grew out of that and like pretty dresses now

Spot on! It’s child abuse. Period.
