While progressives across the nation raced to see who could open up a criminal investigation against Gov. Ron DeSantis first for flying a group of illegal aliens directly to the voters promoting open border policies, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported clearing a new threshold in arrests this year with a month left on the fiscal calendar.
The crisis on the southern border is not a new problem, but rather than ebbing following assurances from President Joe Biden’s administration that it would be addressed, the crisis has been exacerbated to an unprecedented extent. According to records from CBP after more than 200,000 encounters in August, and with one month to go in the fiscal year, the total number of arrests of illegal border crossers crossed the two million mark for the first time ever.
Fox News reporter Adam Shaw covered the development and summed up the details from CBP posting, “NEW: There were 203,598 migrant encounters in August, as the border saw an increase in migrants coming from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, which officials say is driving a ‘new wave of migration’ across the Hemisphere.”

The numbers for August were a slight uptick after July saw barely under 200,000 encounters after a spike to around 241,000 in the spring as the deadline of Title 42 loomed. While the 203,598 encounters in Aug. 2022 was down from 2021 where there were 209,840, there has been a dramatic change in the makeup of the encounters as CPB data revealed unique illegals from Mexico and Central America were down to just over a third.
By contrast, there had been a 175 percent uptick in unique encounters of aliens originating from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua accounting for a reported 55,333 of the arrested in August.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a statement on the matter, “Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest U.S. border.”
“At the same time, the number of migrants entering from Mexico and northern Central America has decreased for the third consecutive month, as the Biden-Harris Administration works with our partners in the region to address the root causes of migration, facilitate repatriation, and take thousands of smugglers off the streets,” he added.
However, what Magnus failed to address was the recent claim stemming from the Department of Homeland Security that alleged Venezuela has been releasing violent criminals from their prisons to send to the U.S. border.
Chuck Callestro tweeted Sunday, “BREAKING REPORT: Venezuela Now Emptying Prisons and SENDING VIOLENT CRIMINALS to The United States Border according to Department of Homeland Security… MEDIA DEAD SILENT..”

This claim was corroborated by Breitbart Texas after a review of a CBP intelligence report from DHS informing Border Patrol to be alert for Venezuelan inmates released by President Nicolás Maduro Moros in move not unlike Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s actions in the 1980s during the Mariel boat lift.
“According to CBP,” Breitbart wrote, “between October 2021 and July 2022, more than 130,000 Venezuelan migrants have been encountered after entering the United States illegally. In all of Fiscal Year 2020, less than 5,000 were apprehended. This represents an increase of nearly 3,000 percent.”
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel reacted to the record number of encounters of illegals by stating, “Because of Biden and Democrats’ dereliction of duty and open border policies, gangs are thriving, drugs are pouring into our neighborhoods, and our communities are less safe. This November, Biden’s border crisis will be top of mind as voters worry about the safety and security of loved ones.”

She also noted the absurd claim from Vice President Kamala Harris, who was put in charge of addressing the border crisis, that the “border is secure” by tweeting, “Democrats think 850,000 ‘gotaways’ illegally crossing the border and escaping into the U.S. is a ‘secure’ border. But 50 illegal immigrants in Martha’s Vineyard is a ‘crisis’ that requires deportation from the island in 24 hours.”

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has suggested the solution to the crisis was not to put an end to the illegal crossings, but rather to fast-track the asylum process.
