Fatal Maine shooting involving ICE sparks major investigation

An ICE-involved shooting in Maine on Monday has reportedly claimed the life of one person.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred in a town called Biddeford. Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau released a brief statement on Facebook, with scant details as the situation continues to unfold.

Look:

“Fellow Biddeford residents and Mainers,” he wrote. “This morning a shooting occurred in Biddeford. A person was killed. ICE was involved. State Police and the Department of Public Safety are now on scene to gather details and would expect the FBI to investigate as well. These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me.”

But reports on exactly what happened differ from outlet to outlet.

Reuters offers no details beyond Fecteau’s post, explaining that none of the agencies involved had issued a statement at the time of publication:

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Department of Homeland Security officials could not be immediately reached for comment. Biddeford police did not comment and referred an inquiry to ICE, while the mayor did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail alleges a man was shot after allegedly driving at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers:

The as-yet unidentified man was killed in Biddeford shortly after 7am ET Monday morning after allegedly driving his car at officers in defiance of an order they’d given him

Photos taken in the aftermath showed a bullet hole on the windshield of the white Kia sedan being driven by the victim when he was killed.

ICE agents have reportedly been carrying out immigration enforcement actions in the town for weeks, and locals were aware of their presence in the community. It’s unclear if the victim was protesting the agents or if he was in the area for unrelated reasons.
