The boxing star who made headlines for knocking out Jake Paul was injured in an accident that claimed two lives.
On Monday, reports indicate Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal crash in Nigeria. The boxer was reportedly in the back seat of a car traveling on the Ogun–Lagos Expressway at the time of the wreck. While Joshua suffered from relatively minor injuries, two others passed away.
Nigerian news outlet The Punch shared additional details on the situation:
The vehicle carrying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with the number plate, KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.
A PUNCH staff member, Adeniyi Orojo, who witnessed the accident told PUNCH Online that Joshua sustained minor injuries, saying that two people died on the spot.
…
“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.
ADVERTISEMENT“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot,” he said.
Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunwalo shed more light on the cause of the accident while speaking with ESPN.
“The accident happened as a result of a burst tire on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road,” Ogunawalo told the outlet.
The fighter is coming off his victory over Paul, whom Joshua knocked out in the 6th round of their fight, securing the 29th win of his boxing career.
“Joshua is a three-time heavyweight champion. He’s held the WBA Super Heavyweight Championship, IBF Heavyweight Championship and WBO Heavyweight Championship. He lost his titles against Oleksandr Usyk back in September 2021,” Fox News reported.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, revealed that he learned of the accident while on vacation.
“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime, we don’t want to speculate on how he is, but thankfully, he appears OK from what I have seen in the images,” he told Daily Mail Sport. “We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”
