Multiple 911 calls made for a chaotic scene in the Riverview, Florida Summerfield subdivision Saturday outside Tampa Bay. Speaking at a press conference, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister broke down how his deputies responded to reports of a man spotted with gunshot wounds and a young black male running through the neighborhood with a gun.
“The scene behind me is one that nightmares are made of. And that is extremely heartbreaking,” expressed Chronister to the media.
As he outlined, around 4 p.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to a call of shots fired and encountered an armed suspect alleged to have shot his mother and her boyfriend. It was then that they began a roughly 16-minute long negotiation to de-escalate the situation as the boy repeatedly pointed the firearm at his own head, at least six times.
The sheriff said of the “calm” effort that employed restraint and the use of a less lethal projectile to force compliance that “their deescalation was textbook.”
Meanwhile, as emergency responders were kept out of the area due to the active threat, deputies located the injured boyfriend who reportedly suffered five gunshot wounds scattered across his hands, face and lower torso.
He was rushed out of the area and transported to Tampa General Hospital where he was reportedly in critical condition.
When deputies located the suspect’s mother in a driveway several residences over, attempts to render aid were futile as she had succumbed to her injuries.
They also encountered the suspect’s older brother who explained that he had heard his mother and the boyfriend in an argument when gunshots were fired. When he stepped out of his bedroom to see what was happening, he was said to have witnessed his younger brother shot their mother before the gun was turned on him, causing him to flee.
“This family’s lives have been changed forever. They lost a mother,” expressed Chronister at the press conference. “This is heartbreaking. Our suspect is only 14 years of age. This 14-year-old young boy’s life is over too. He will never see the outside of a detention facility.”
The sheriff expressed that the details he had available at the time were “extremely preliminary” as he took questions. Chronister indicated that records showed only one prior call from the residence related to a stolen vehicle incident and that it was unclear if the suspect had experienced any abuse that may have led to the shooting.
What he did say was, “I can’t ever imagine any dispute over anything being that important that you would murder your own mother.”
The sheriff also encouraged anyone who believes they are experiencing domestic violence to utilize resources like The Spring in the Tampa Bay area that are equipped to aid survivors and their children.
