The midterm elections are fast-approaching and politicians from both sides of the aisle seem more than a little eager to bolster their name ID and get the 2024 conversation started in earnest. Among those rumored to be considering a bid for a presidential nomination is California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), but an ex-staffer with a record of blasting his old boss’s leadership offered some unsolicited advice after one of the “fundamental rules of politics” was broken.
Before President Joe Biden took office, Golden State Gavin Newsom was offering a taste of the devastation progressive policies would bring to the nation. Ever-faithful to the agenda, the governor has been undeterred by his failures on handling the COVID pandemic, energy shortages and the economy among other issues and has set his sights on holding his record up against the myriad successes of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
Bob Brigham, a senior editor at Raw Story, proud progressive and former staffer to Newsom, made sure to publicly state how awful his one-time boss’s mere suggestion of a debate with America’s governor was without even going into the likelihood of DeSantis making the Democrat challenger look silly.
“One of the fundamental rules of politics is that the only person who demands debates,” Brigham wrote, “is the person losing the argument. (disclosure, ex-Newsom staffer)”

As previously reported, Newsom threw down the gauntlet Friday with a criticism of DeSantis’ transport of illegal aliens to Martha’s Vineyard along with a reference to the nerve-hitting jab from the Florida governor that the Californian’s “hair gel is interfering with his brain function.”
Captioning Dan Rather’s suggestion of a debate, Newson tweeted: “Hey [DeSantis], clearly you’re struggling, distracted, and busy playing politics with people’s lives. Since you have only one overriding need–attention–let’s take this up & debate. I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day.”

Newsom concluded the post by tagging CNN whom Rather had suggested host the debate which, as the former CBS news anchor had suggested, would likely “be huge.” What may have been overlooked by the liberals was that, while DeSantis’ approval has been rising for his stance on the frontline in the culture war, adherence to the woke mindset has only garnered ruin and disfavor for the left.
This was evidenced not only by the recall attempt of Newsom, but by the litany of posts from Brigham ripping into the failures of the governor to lead California. In June 2021 for instance, the ex-staffer tweeted in response to a claim by Newsom of leading the nation, “You started the week closed and your vaccination numbers suck, don’t pretend you’re doing a good job when you’ve been one of the worst governors at responding to the pandemic.”

Eliminating any suspicion that perhaps Brigham had a political epiphany and was growing conservative upon witnessing the failures of progressive leadership, the senior editor put those thoughts to rest on many occasions including in Oct. 2021 when he took a break from railing against Newsom to celebrate a supposed “win for California and the nation.”
“Gavin Newsom requiring vaccination for eligible K-12 students is just common sense public policy,” he wrote. “Huge win for California and the nation.”
