Much like the suspected meritless challenge to the White House ballroom, a former Trump attorney’s reaction to a Supreme Court ruling relied on disfavor with a crude comparison.

Monday, President Donald Trump’s construction of a new East Wing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue cleared another lawfare hurdle in a ruling from the Supreme Court staying an injunction blocking the project. Reacting to the 5-4 decision that pit Chief Justice John Roberts alongside the leftists of the bench, former Assistant U.S. Attorney Ty Cobb compared his former employer’s design choices to “some combination of a whorehouse and Las Vegas.”
Joining CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront,” the onetime legal counsel of Trump’s first administration was teed up for reaction to quotes from Roberts like a reference to Winston Churchill, who once said, “[w]e shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.”
“One of the other things that the chief justice said was, and I quote from his dissent, ‘The White House is an iconic American building whose symbolism and history are wrapped up in its architecture.’ That is, in a sense, a non-legal statement, right? That is a statement that’s somehow more profound than that,” said the host.
“Yeah, very much so. I mean, it certainly touched me because, as somebody who had spent a lot of time in the White House and, and in or about the grounds, you know, it was a beautiful setting and a historic setting,” responded Cobb. “And it’s, you know, it’s turning into some combination of a whorehouse and Las Vegas at this stage of the game with all the golden paving of it. So, it’s tragic what’s going on. But sadly, it’s gonna continue, at least for the time being.”
The quote from the WWII United Kingdom prime minister followed Roberts furthering his position aligned with Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson in dissent, writing in part, “… the Court misconceives the plaintiff’s injury, allowing the Executive’s likely infringement of the Legislature’s power of the purse and authority to regulate federal property in the District of Columbia to continue. Today’s decision is no victory for the separation of powers.”
On the side of the majority, it was made clear that the ruling was not based on “the legality of the government’s East Wing project,” but rather the conclusion that, “based on the submissions before us, the government is likely to prevail in showing that the [National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States] lacks Article III standing to challenge the project in federal court and that the remaining stay factors favor relief.”
Issuing his own response to the ruling, the president posted, “I am pleased to report that the United States Supreme Court has just ruled in favor of the Ballroom/Military Complex being built without any further contingency, doubt, or threat.”
Holding the view that Congress already provided the executive authority for the project, Trump continued, “We are living in the Golden Age of America, and this Building will be one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C. When completed in the Summer of 2028, the magnificent Ballroom and Military Complex will be something that the entire Country is very proud of. The Project, despite the baseless lawsuit brought by the so-called National Trust for Historic Preservation of the United States, which is not in any way affiliated with the United States Government, is under budget and ahead of schedule.”
“The Ballroom is totally funded by Great Patriots and Corporations and, therefore, is a Gift — At no cost to the American Taxpayer,” he reminded.
