Fox’s Bret Baier aggressively confronts Trump over 2020 election in heated exchange

A question from Fox News anchor Bret Baier on a crucial voting bloc led to a heated exchange with former President Donald Trump over the outcome of the 2020 election.

“That’s not what the votes show.”

Part one of the president’s sit down on “Special Report” aired Monday amidst Trump’s ongoing mockery of the onetime cable news titan after Fox News suffered a ratings loss to MSNBC. Whether or not it was reciprocal, Baier confronted the 2024 presidential candidate with some ratings of his own regarding the preferences of independent suburban women voters who didn’t seem to be turning in Trump’s favor any since the prior election.

Decrying the anchor’s polling data and his position on the last contest, the president asserted, “First of all, I won in 2020 by a lot, ok? Let’s get that straight. I won in 2020.”

“You know that, that’s not what the votes show,” Baier initially tried interrupting.

Undeterred, Trump continued with a reference to Catherine Engelbrecht’s efforts investigating alleged ballot stuffing as seen in “2000 Mules” through the nonprofit True the Vote, “You take a look at Truth the Vote where they have people stuffing the ballot boxes on tapes, or-”

Cutting in again, the anchor fired back exasperated, “Mr. President, that was all looked into.”

“Let’s go to recent: FBI, Twitter. Let’s go to recent: the 51 agents. All corrupt stuff, Bret,” Trump continued.

Still, the host swatted away any concerns over potential election interference connected to federal agencies during the race against then former-Vice President Joe Biden, “Understand about the Hunter Biden, all fair things, but you lost the 2020 election.”

“Uh, Bret, uh you take a look at all of the stuffed ballots. You take a look at all of the things, including things like the 51 intelligence agents,” the president reiterated referencing the former officials who had discredited the authenticity of Hunter Biden’s laptop.

While Baier rehashed the preferred line about the 2020 election already having undergone recounts where necessary and been litigated, Trump contended, “They were counting ballots, not the authenticity of the ballot. The ballots were fake ballots. This was a very rigged election.”

After the discussion had spiraled down into an argument about 2020, the interviewer circled back around to his original question and asked, “Are you going to — this is how you’re going to tell the independent suburban woman voter to vote for you?”

“No, no, no, we’re off to winning an election and I think we’re winning very well,” Trump replied as the subject shifted to polling data. Baier reminded him that polls can change before asking what takeaways the president had from his first term.

It was then that Trump conceded the possibility that he wasn’t a shoo-in for the nomination, but held firm to the idea that he was the only one who could go all the way in the general election.

“I would like to be less combative. But I find the press is extremely dishonest and if I’m not combative, I don’t get my word across. If I’m not combative, I don’t know — I don’t think you could win,” he said.  “I think, regardless, me or somebody else, if somebody else got the nomination, these radical left maniacs would come after them at a level like you’ve never seen before and they’re not gonna be able to withstand it.”
