Giving the Tide Pod Generation a run for their money, an apparent TikTok trend has people eating the cellophane wrap that is included with Fruit Roll-Ups.
The fad was serious enough that the company behind the fruit-flavored snack rolls posted on the app: “Fruit Roll-Ups Warns TikTokers Against Eating Plastic Wrap as Part of Trend as Lawmakers Debate Banning App.”
Perhaps, if this truly is “a thing,” Gen Z should be banned and we can just keep the alleged Chinese espionage apparatus known as TikTok.
A Fruit Roll-Ups representative showed a clip of the video making the rounds of a woman claiming that she was eating the plastic wrap and then failing at an attempt to duplicate the act demonstrated. The rep then declared, “Nope. Plastic.”

There was plenty of skepticism over the woman’s claim that she was eating the plastic wrapper, which is not edible.
“She’s removing the plastic and rerolling them because it’s gong viral. It’s all for engagement,” one TikTok user said.
“I swear she’s literally just resealed it after removing the plastic,” another user said.
All of this coming as TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew endured a five-plus hour hearing before Congress about the company’s risks to U.S. national security, CNBC reported. Chew was grilled “on the app’s potential to harm kids through its addictive features and potentially dangerous posts, as well as whether data from U.S. users could end up in the hands of the Chinese government,” the business network noted.
Eating plastic wrappers would certainly rank up there with “dangerous posts.”
According to TikTok, 150 million Americans enjoy the app, and Chew denied that TikTok shares data with the Chinese Communist Party. At the same time, while admitting that China-based employees can currently access some U.S. data he said mitigation efforts were underway.
