Newly elected NC Dem to face felony car theft charge next week

LaKesha Womack was elected to Congress on Tuesday by voters in North Carolina, defeating incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Moore.

In exactly one week from Tuesday, Womack is set to be in court to answer a felony car theft charge, but having that shadow hanging over the Democrat apparently did not sway many voters.

Womack is accused of failing to return a rental car in 2019, according to the Charlotte Observer. The newspaper reported that a criminal summons was issued against Womack in January 2020 but was returned unserved the following month. In mid-October, some six years later, Womack was inexplicably served at one of her campaign events.

And talk about an improbable win, Womack reportedly raised just $59,000 compared to $2.1 million for Moore, who carried the district by 16 points in 2024.

If convicted, the Congresswoman-elect could face a sentence anywhere from four months to more than three years in jail.

Sadly, that would not automatically disqualify her from serving in Congress, according to the New York Post.

“Lawmakers sentenced to two or more years of prison are expected to avoid committee assignments and party leadership positions, according to House rules. A two-thirds vote from the full House would be needed to expel a lawmaker, even if convicted of a felony,” the newspaper reported.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
