An Ohio Senate debate repeatedly went off the rails this Monday as the two candidates, one a Democrat and one a Republican, traded barbs with not only one another but even with audience members.

The candidates were Democrat candidate Morgan Harper and Republican candidate Josh Mandel.

Mandel is a notable name because he’s positioned himself as a “MAGA” Republican though former President Donald Trump has yet to endorse him or anybody else in the Ohio race.

“I am trying very hard to gain the endorsement of President Trump. I am doing everything I can to earn the president’s support, and I’m confident I will earn the president’s support as long as I keep doing what I’m doing,” he himself admitted during the start of Monday’s debate.

Mandel Spars With Audience Member

At one point in the debate, a moderator sought to question Mandel about his habit of labeling Black Lives Matter rioters “thugs.” But as the question was being asked, an overly excited audience member decided to butt in.

Watch the stunning back-and-forth exchange below:

“Mmhmm, put him out!” the audience member said.

Though the moderator tried to silence the audience member, Mandel jumped in to confront her, asking, “What do you mean, ‘Put him out?’ As in, with a bullet? I thought this was America, where we could debate freely.”

The woman responded by demanding that Mandel be removed from the building because he’s not black.

“Ask him to leave. He don’t belong in the black community. They shoudn’t have let him in,” she said.

The moderator could be heard meanwhile telling her to stop.

“Hey sister, listen to me. Don’t do that. This is America. He can be here. Don’t do that. Don’t embarrass me,” he said.

The woman responded by doubling down.

“I’m not embarrassing you. But to bring a white man in a black community like that? I’m finished, but don’t you suck up to him. He’s in the black community. He’s calling my parents thugs. Make him answer the question,” she said.

Mandel has frequently tweeted about BLM thugs, but in the context of said thugs committing violent acts, including but not limited to arson, vandalism and looting:

He responded to the audience member’s attacks by educating her on his history.

“Let me tell you something, ma’am. I put my life in the hands of young Black guys. I had young Black men put their life in my hands, in the United States Marine Corp in two tours in Iraq,” he said.

“So don’t stand there and lecture me. Those were my brothers whether they were Black or white or Hispanic or if they were Asian. Don’t stand there and lecture me about race and color. We put our lives in each other’s hands. Those are my brothers as marines.”

Mandel and Harper Spar With Each Other

During a back-and-forth exchange with Harper about Medicare-for-All, Mandel accused her of being even “dumber” than notoriously childlike Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“I told the story earlier about being at a town hall, the bar and restaurant down the street, where I told folks I’m going to date Morgan Harper. She’s like AOC, only smarter,” he said, setting up the joke.

Then came the punchline: “After hearing that answer, I actually think she’s like AOC only dumber, because the reality is if we had universal health care in this country, it would bring down the quality of health care for every American citizen.”

Listen:

During another exchange, Harper accused him of being “funded by corporate interests” and spouting “whatever ‘big lie’ Donald Trump is forcing you to talk about.” He clapped back by saying she’s an “angry radical leftist” who’s “all about political gameship” and who’s the true swamp creature.

“You get up here and you call me names, call others names. But the reality is you sound like you’ve been in Washington for thirty years,” he said.

And finally, at one point Harper spoke about growing up in an “abusive household” and about how she’d had to “work my butt off to get scholarships to Princeton and Stanford.”

“That’s something you wouldn’t know about, because you’re just used to getting whatever you want,” she then added.

Note that she said this to a man who completed two tours overseas …

Mandel responded by asking, “Why are you so angry?”

The question remained unanswered til and through the very end, when, in another show of anger, Harper refused to shake Mandel’s hand.
