A Florida lawmaker’s ongoing effort to ensure congressmen are loyal solely to America included reason to believe a colleague may be less aligned with Minnesota and more “Somalia First.”
Building momentum with the wind at his back, courtesy of the considerable scrutiny being applied to fraud in the Gopher State, Florida Rep. Randy Fine (R) aims to pass common-sense legislation to address an issue long taken for granted. Amid his push to ensure only American citizens serve as elected officials on Capitol Hill, the lawmaker presented the possibility that Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (D) may still hold allegiance to her home country, Somalia.
“I think one of the things that’s extraordinary is we don’t even know who the dual citizens are,” said Fine during an interview on Newsmax’s “The Pulse” with host David Harris Jr. “So, we know, for example, in the case of Ilhan Omar, she was born a citizen of Somalia.”
“Unless she chose to give it up, she’s still a citizen of Somalia. And certainly the way that she acts, and all the people she helped defraud this country in Minnesota in order to help Somalia, would suggest it — many of her public remarks say she’s Somalia First. We don’t know,” argued the congressman.
Ilhan Omar is still a citizen of Somalia, and she has never given up her citizenship.

The laws of Somalia, as laid out in a comparative study of African citizenship compiled by George Soros’ Open Society Foundation, permit dual citizenship and require a declaration to renounce Somali citizenship. Despite the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America requiring the absolute and entire renunciation and abjuration of “all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen,” Somali law does not explicitly recognize a legal effect regarding citizenship status.
To Fine’s point, it remains unknown whether or not Omar, who came to the United States as a refugee, ever formally renounced the citizenship of the nation that she fled. As plausible as it is that she hasn’t done so, given her frequent defense of her state’s Somali community, it is equally plausible that she took the necessary steps outside the public eye.
Fine has repeatedly gone on record opposed to anyone with alleged “dual loyalty” serving in Congress and introduced the Disqualifying Dual Loyalty Act bill to address those who may have been elected who maintain ties to their foreign country of origin.
“You’re either American or you’re Somalian,” he told Harris with regard specifically to Omar, whom he has called for being expelled both from the House and from the country. “But, we don’t want foreigners serving in Congress.”
“The only people who should be serving in Congress are American citizens,” added Fine as reactions poured in to agree with the congressman, and many called for prompt accountability applicable to any confirmed wrongdoing that may have taken place.
The question is why is she still an American citizen when there’s proof she committed immigration fraud? Why hasn’t she been removed from congress?

How about just holding naturalized citizens accountable to the oath they took? The very first sentence of the oath states;
