Vice President Kamala Harris is revisiting her old policy positions, making changes that some on the left may not like.
The latest example of her flip-flopping, presumably to appeal to more moderate voters, is her stance on the federal job guarantee, according to the Washington Examiner. In 2019, Harris was one of 14 people to co-sponsor a resolution declaring that the federal government has the responsibility to pass a Green New Deal. The federal job guarantee section of this resolution promised “a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States.”
Now, however, it appears that Harris is walking back her previous support for this position. A spokesperson for her presidential campaign told the Washington Examiner, “The campaign is trying to be forward-looking, rather than looking backward. The aide said Harris is very proud of the Biden administration’s climate record and is excited to build upon the progress of those changes.”
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Anna Kelly hammered Harris for her sudden change of heart.
“Kamala Harris cannot be unburdened by what has been when it comes to her support for radical environmental policies like the $93 trillion, job-killing Green New Deal, and bans on fracking, plastic straws, and red meat,” she said. “Harris can try to rewrite her extreme record, but Americans see through it — Kamala Harris is weak, failed, and dangerously liberal, and only President Trump can unleash our economy to Make America Great Again.”
As BizPac Review reported, Harris has also changed her mind on fracking, previously supporting a ban on the practice.
“There’s no question I’m in favor of banning fracking and starting with what we can do on day one around public lands, right?” the vice president said during a CNN townhall in 2019. “And then there has to be legislation, but, yes, that’s something I’ve taken on in California. I have a history of working on this issue. [W]e have to just acknowledge that the residual impact of fracking is enormous in terms of the health and safety of communities.”
Former President Donald Trump recently called Harris out on this position, prompting a spokesperson from her campaign to reach out to The Hill to rebuff the claim.
“Trump’s false claims about fracking bans are an obvious attempt to distract from his own plans to enrich oil and gas executives at the expense of the middle class. The Biden-Harris Administration passed the largest ever climate change legislation and under their leadership, America now has the highest ever domestic energy production.”
