If there is one thing Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore loves, it’s being in the middle of the action.
Unfortunately, that kind of thing doesn’t come without risks.
During his coverage of Hurricane Ian from an intersection in Punta Gorda, Florida, Cantore was hit by a tree branch while struggling to remain upright during the 100 MPH winds. The Category 4 storm did its worst, but Cantore emerged victorious.

The video has split social media. One faction believes that Cantore should have sought shelter much sooner, while the other believes that he is just doing what he loves and understands the risks better than anyone else.
They have, multiple times, and multiple times he says no. Stephanie Abrams and Mike Bettes both would’ve been in a more sheltered location. Abrams nearly got injured covering Matthew and sheltered in place for the rest of the storm.
Jim? He goes right back out.

He doesn’t do it for the money. He once stood in an incredible snowstorm and experienced several bouts of thundersnow.
He said, quote, “You can have your 300 million Powerball, I’ll take this any day.”
He loves this job.

Jim Cantore is the goat of reporting storms! You know it’s gonna be an event when he’s sent out!

his employer would fire him if he didn’t
Even if it’s not an on-paper part of the contract, weathermen are expected to do this, and they will simply find or make a reason to get rid of him if he refuses

Nope. You wouldn’t ask Tom Brady to not play the Super Bowl, don’t ask Jim Cantore to shelter in place during a hurricane.

We know @JimCantore but sometimes we need to think about whether Jim Should-tore
I’ll show myself out

You can’t keep a winning streak going forever.

I thought he was going to end up perpendicular to the sidewalk while holding on to the sign post.

This is so unnecessary and dangerous.
— Mc Nelly Torres (@WatchdogDiva) September 28, 2022
People are really calling this “unnecessary” and “unbelievable that reporters are forced to do this” and yes, absolutely, HOWEVER:
This is Jim Cantore, an absolute legend of a meteorologist who *chooses* to stand in the middle of a hurricane to show people how bad it truly is.

Live and let live, if he wants to do this for a living, it’s his prerogative. No need to be judgmental; I see him as a stuntman.
