Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume weighed in on the ongoing conflict in Iran and how it could impact Republicans during the midterms.
Speaking to Bret Baier on Monday’s airing of “Special Report,” Hume addressed clips of Democrats rushing to condemn the war in Iran as well as President Donald Trump. Ultimately, he concluded that the president may just need a little more time to extricate the country, but it leaves the Republican Party vulnerable and gives the left an opening in November.

“I think the Iranians are betting the president doesn’t have time, and the president is betting he’s going to be able to run them out of money and out of military assets — who knows how this will turn out,” Hume explained.
“Politically, Democrats are jumping on this ahead of the midterms, characterizing the war a certain way and getting into it a certain way,” Baier said, jumping to a clip of Democrats lambasting the president and the war in Iran, including Senator Chuck Schumer alleging there is no “plan” or “end game.”
“What do you make of that criticism – politically – and how much weight it carries as we get closer to November?” the host wondered, referring to the upcoming midterm elections.
“Well, I think it points to something that’s part of what the president is facing here, Bret. And that is that some of the things that he might need to do to get the Strait open, for example, and perhaps even to accomplish other ends in dealing with Tehran, may be militarily feasible, but politically they are very difficult,” Hume said. “I mean, we’re seeing some casualties now. Now, in military terms, these are not large casualties, but nonetheless they are politically very important and very sensitive matters as they always have been.”
“And in today’s war, of course, the rule seems to be ‘No ground troops’ because that is, of course, another source of casualties. So, I think the president’s in kind of a tough spot here in that sense. And he promised to keep us out of endless wars or unsatisfactory wars, and now he’s in one, and it’s not at all clear how it’s gonna end. So, he’s vulnerable on this point, and in political terms, he does need to get this over with. But what he may need his time, and he doesn’t have a lot of time,” he added.
