Hero with a gun stops mass shooting at Oregon elementary school

A 16-year-old gunman opened fire at an Oregon elementary school on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher, and the carnage may have been much worse but for the actions of a man being described as a hero.

The man, possibly the father of a student at the school, was armed with a concealed carry weapon, and he rushed into Silver Rail Elementary School and killed the shooter before he could take any more lives.

“Looks like the shooter has been neutralized – possibly shot by a father at the school,” emergency dispatchers said in audio shared on Broadcastify, according to the New York Post. “Not sure about patients at this time. The police are arriving.”

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the shooter was killed.

“The suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school, pursued him into the school, and engaged him,” Krantz said at a press conference.

Fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith hailed the heroic bystander after seeing the shooter in the building.

“That person saw something. They did something, and that took its own courage,” she told KPTV. “I’m just grateful that that person was able to apprehend the suspect.”

The teen shooter, armed with a long gun, opened fire outside the school after being confronted by a driver in the parking lot, striking the vehicle several times and shattering the rear window, according to the Post. He then shot at the locks on the doors to the school before entering.

“Three students — ages 5, 8 and 11 — were killed along with a teacher. Another student, age 7, and a teacher, 54, are critical in hospital,” the newspaper reported.

The identity of the 16-year-old boy has not been released, nor has the identity of the hero who stopped the mass shooting.

“This is a terrible tragedy and we are working hard to investigate this incident and get as much information as possible out to the public,” Krantz said.

There was some chatter online about the Oregon law banning guns on school property and whether or not the hero could face charges:

Here’s a sampling of other respoinses to the story, as seen on X:
