Horrifying bodycam shows man shoot cop after following frightened woman to police station

Recently-released bodycam footage shows the frightening moment a La Habra Police Department officer caught a bullet to the chest in a gunfight that would ultimately end the suspect’s life.

In August 2021, a woman phoned the police to report that a man, later identified as 22-year-old Matthew-Tuan Ahn Tran, was following her in his vehicle as she left work. She was advised to drive to the police station, so she did. Both Tran and the victim parked, and Tran exited his vehicle and made his way up to the entrance of the PD.

The video begins with Officer Mark Milward approaching the suspect and asking him if he was associated with the two vehicles that had just pulled up.

“What’s going on here?” he asks Tran.

“Uh, I’m just seeing somebody right now,” the suspect responds.

The suspect lied about not being involved with the two vehicles that had pulled up at which point Milward turned his back on Tran to walk toward the victim’s vehicle, where his partner Officer Abigail Fox was talking with the woman. Moments later, Fox can be heard shouting “Hey!” which prompts Milward to turn around. As the bodycam pans back to the police department entrance, Tran can be seen holding a handgun aimed at Milward, shooting the officer before he had a chance to react.

Prosecutors explained that the bullet pierced the vest of Officer Milward, striking him directly in the chest. He would go on to recover from the injury.

At that point, Officer Fox draws her firearm and shoots five times with at least one of the shots striking the suspect in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. He was then disarmed, cuffed and later pronounced dead at the scene. According to an autopsy, Tran had marijuana and methamphetamines in his system at the time of the shooting.
