The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) called out the “liberal brain rot” of Democrats like Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) who voted against a bill named after a Border Patrol agent killed in his district.
“It requires a certain level of liberal brain rot for Vicente Gonzalez to think evading Border Patrol is acceptable,” NRCC Spokeswoman Delanie Bomar said in a statement this week. “Texas voters deserve better than Gonzalez who sides with dangerous and illegal activity over the safety of the community,”
Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez was killed in a crash in 2022 while pursuing a group of migrants crossing the border near Mission, Texas. The 38-year-old father of two had served in his position for a decade and Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.) introduced the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act last year in response.

The bill passed the House on Tuesday but that was without the support of 154 Democrats who voted against it, including Rep. Gonzalez (no relation) who represents the district in the Rio Grande Valley where the agent had been killed.

“This bill that would toughen criminal penalties for undocumented immigrants fleeing border patrol in motor vehicles,” read part of a post by Rep. Mayra Flores (R-Texas).
The first Mexican-born member of the House, who won her seat in a June 2022 special election, faced off with Rep. Gonzalez in November after redistricting and lost.
The bill seeks to “impose federal penalties on illegal migrants and smugglers who engage in high-speed car chases with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or local law enforcement assisting the federal government,” a press release read last year. “Under this legislation, failure to yield would be a federal crime and if anyone is killed during the apprehension, smugglers could face life sentences.”
Ahead of the vote, Ciscomani discussed his bill which saw a companion bill introduced in the Senate by Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
Too many lives have been jeopardized, or even taken, due to bad actors engaging in high-speed pursuits.

“Gonzalez just went on the record in support of border smugglers and illegal immigrants who evade Border Patrol. Dangerous high-speed chases often occur when smugglers and illegal immigrants try to escape immigration laws, putting other drivers at risk,” the NRCC said in a press release. “Even though 63% of Americans think Biden should be tougher on illegal immigration, Gonzalez supports putting illegal immigrants before the safety of South Texans.”

Rep. Gonzalez does not appear to have addressed the comments, or the vote, as of yet.
“Our border is out of control. The Biden Administration has failed south Texas and border communities from California to the Gulf Coast,” GOP Rep. Monica De La Cruz of Texas said. “Our Border Patrol and other law enforcement should be given the tools necessary to do their jobs and not wonder if chasing a human or drug smuggler will end their lives and leave their families picking up the pieces. I hope that this legislation, named in honor of hero Agent Raul Gonzalez, makes criminals think twice before evading our border’s law enforcement officers. This madness has to end.”
