House Republicans fear primary losers put already-thin majority at risk

House Republicans are concerned about their already-thin majority, and primary losers aren’t helping matters.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, some expressed concerns that colleagues whose primary ambitions get squashed may not end up turning up for key votes, essentially handing over power to the opposing party.

“It’s a real problem,” said one Republican. “Is one of them going to be gone for his runoff? Will another not come back at all because he’s mad? Is another one not going to come back because he lost?”

The anonymous GOP representative was asked if this could “translate to Republicans losing a functional majority in the House.”

“We could, that’s why everybody’s nervous about it,” they said.

“In the Lone Star State alone, two House Republicans are guaranteed not to be returning next year after last week’s primaries. Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, lost his bid to unseat Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who is headed for a runoff with state Attorney General Ken Paxton. And Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, faced an upset against a primary challenger running to his right, conservative state lawmaker Steve Toth,” Fox News reported.

It should be noted that neither man indicated the intent to skip votes, though Fox notes that Hunt’s attendance record has already generated some controversy on its own.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Florida, voiced his concern that some of the “18 other House Republicans currently vying for different positions in upcoming primaries and general elections” could have priorities other than attending votes.

“Our margins are as razor-thin as they can possibly be, so we need everybody to show up. So yeah, that could potentially be an issue. I hope it isn’t.”

“I think it’s a concern,” agreed Rep. Russell Fry, R-South Carolina, in a comment to Fox News Digital. “I hope that they recognize the moment. There’s still a lot of lane left in this Congress, and people have put their faith in their elected representatives to get the job done. So they need to be here.”
