In a stunning about-face, outspoken Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert has apologized to offended Muslims for an off-color joke about Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar that she’d made at a recent private Thanksgiving break event with her supporters.
“I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar. I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly. There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction,” she tweeted Friday afternoon, suggesting she may be interested in apologizing to Omar as well.
The stunning capitulation came exactly a day after a far-left activist affiliated with the propaganda group Meidas Touch published a video to Twitter of Boebert at the event with her supporters making a joke about Omar being a terrorist.
“So the other night on the House floor was not my first jihad squad moment. So I was getting into an elevator with one of my staffers. And he and I are leaving the Capitol. We’re going back to my office. And we get in the elevator, and I see a Capitol Police officer running hurriedly to the elevator,” said Boebert.
“I see fret all over his face, and he’s reaching… The door’s shutting. Like, I can’t open it. Like, what’s happening? I look to my left, and there she is: Ilhan Omar. I said, ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack — we should be fine,'” the congresswoman continued.
She added that unlike on Twitter, Omar is meek and doesn’t make eye contact in person.
Listen:
If Lauren Boebert, at a campaign event, suggested Ilhan Omar was a threat to blow up the US Capitol Building, is that enough for Boebert to be stripped of committee assignments?

Over the Thanksgiving break, Lauren Boebert said she was recently in a Capitol elevator with Ilhan Omar when a fretful Capitol police officer ran up.
Lauren Boebert said: “Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine.”
Boebert then called Ilhan Omar, “jihad squad.” pic.twitter.com/Y7f0nFbnud

The joke was presumably based on Omar’s extensive history of siding with, defending and literally spending time with terrorists.
The video shared by the left-wing activist “PatriotTakes” quickly went viral, triggering widespread backlash from not only Omar’s supporters but also her allies in the establishment press.
Case in point:
This is pure anti-Muslim bigotry and as such is completely contrary to what the USA is supposed to stand for. That this is tolerated in American politics and the House GOP is an indictment against anyone who is silent about it. https://t.co/b5dNprwG2n

She herself responded by calling Boebert a “buffoon,” claiming the story was made-up and alleging that the Colorado congresswoman is the one who acts meek.
She also demanded that the congresswoman be held accountable by congressional leaders over her joke. Note that this demand for accountability came only days after Democrats voted to strip Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar of his committee assignments because of an offensive but ultimately harmless cartoon.
It appears as if the Democrat Party’s current focus is on condemning and silencing offensive speech, and not on, say, inflation, gas prices, supply chain issues, etc.
Look at Omar’s response below:
Fact, this buffoon looks down when she sees me at the Capitol, this whole story is made up. Sad she thinks bigotry gets her clout.
Anti-Muslim bigotry isn’t funny & shouldn’t be normalized. Congress can’t be a place where hateful and dangerous Muslims tropes get no condemnation. https://t.co/S1APT7RbqW

Saying I am a suicide bomber is no laughing matter. @GOPLeader and @SpeakerPelosi need to take appropriate action, normalizing this bigotry not only endangers my life but the lives of all Muslims. Anti-Muslim bigotry has no place in Congress. https://t.co/A0VxI3uTmH pic.twitter.com/QTmqaGaZrM

Boebert responded with her apology the morning after.
Look:
I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar. I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly. There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction.

Following the apology, she quickly returned to tweeting about issues that matter, including spiking inflation, spiking gas prices and endless supply chain shortages.
While she was quick to apologize, which was unusual for her given her outspoken nature, an army of conservatives were not so eager to play nice.
Indeed, these conservatives rushed at the opportunity to slam Omar and her defenders, with some rightly noting that Omar does have links to terrorism and does have a history of speaking derogatorily about Jews, and others pointing out that far more obscene remarks are made about conservatives on a near-daily basis.
Look:
Sadly #IlhanOmar has a soft spot for terrorists like al Qaeda

Now replace the word ‘Muslim’ with ‘Jewish’ in your post and you will be close to the apology we should have gotten from you years ago https://t.co/BNiolWG9VB

But your liberal guilt makes you fine w/ your network & all the rest of the Left
Calling #KyleRittenhouse a White Supremacist & murderer
Hypocrite https://t.co/9heisFs5mA

Funny, I don’t remember Jake getting upset when Omar repeatedly called Republican congressional members violent insurrectionists when there’s no evidence of that whatsoever. But make a joke about someone who has literally supported terrorists and teeth are gnashed. https://t.co/I8AsId2sFV

Jake Tapper:
1) Helped to establish the fraudulent Trump-Russia collusion narrative
2) Was a conduit of IC disinfo
3) Was part of DNC/Media attempts to overturn an election
4) Promoted the ridiculous ICA
5) Attacked Rittenhouse unjustly
And he’s apologized for none of it. https://t.co/l7B9bysUo8
