With the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life still fresh, some are floating the possibility that “negligence” may not explain the events of that day.

Former US Army sniper and current GOP Rep. Cory Mills visited CNN and was asked to give his take on the event by CNN anchor Kate Bolduan.
“Even more than that as this continues to develop as a story, we get more information about it, we‘ve also heard that up to 20-plus minutes that this individual is up on the roof, and that two different civilians who were attending the rally had taken photos and actually sent this to local law enforcement,” he explained. “We also had heard about local law enforcement accessing the roof and having the rifle pointed at them, in which case they had retreated.”
“I look at all of these things and I look at different videos where an assailant will pull a firearm on a law enforcement officer and the first thing they do is they immediately pull and draw and mitigate the threat and the risk. You know, I asked why local law enforcement officer did not do so?” Mills continued. “The other thing is that when you step in advanced team, and I keep hearing this about the perimeter elements, you know, the perimeter is actually established by your threats that are in the area. So if I don‘t have any threats outside of 100 yards, okay. Fine. I can cordon off a certain area. But if I have a building 100 160 yards perfectly adjacent to the stage, that’s an obvious threat, especially with an elevated position that has overwatch. That‘s a sniper‘s paradise and you know, we talk about eagle sense as you also have which no one talks about, but the water tower.”
Mills admits that he’s having a “difficult time not leaning myself towards this was intentional as opposed to fecklessness,” which caused Bolduan to grill him further.
“What do you mean by intentional? Do you mean intentional failure on the part of-” she asked before Mills interjected.
“No I wouldn’t say intentional failure on the part of, but I gotta just, you know I sit here and I scratch my head,” he responded. “You don‘t want to be the conspiracist-”
“I’m telling you because that’s what it’s leaning towards,” an incredulous Bolduan interrupted.
“I know, and that’s the issue is that you walk this fine balance of, you’re not trying to be a conspiracist but you’re looking at this like ‘How could this have gone so-‘” he continued.
“It‘s one thing if someone on the streets says it, I mean, you Cory Mills member of Congress, former sniper, you saying it makes my eyebrows go up what when you say you‘re walking the line on this intentional, what?” the CNN anchor pushed.
“You know, it almost seems to me, I think that the investigation is necessary at this point within Congress, not just the FBI, not just others,” the former sniper said. “You know, I look back at I‘m thinking all right, you know, for an individual, if you looked at the escalations and how they are trying to approach him. Let‘s just say that it was like, ‘okay, first we want to censor and silence you, then we want to indict and imprison you now we are attempting to kill you and take you-”
“Woah woah woah woah, let‘s slow down, please. I‘m hearing two things from you. I don‘t want to jump ahead of things, but I‘m also hearing you jumping ahead of things,” Bolduan once again interrupted, appearing desperate to derail the train of conversation.
“Well actually I‘m just looking at all the different possible capabilities,” he said, trying to assuage the apoplectic anchor. “You know, one of the things as a military remember, one of the things as the person who run the special operation communities before, one of the people who’s actually done this is that you look at all potential analysis, right?”
“But Donald Trump and his team have said, dial it back and don’t blame this on Joe Biden,” Bolduan pointed out.
“Oh well, actually I didn’t say Joe Biden,” Mills replied.
“Who is ‘they’ then, let’s be very specific,” the anchor pushed.
“That’s what the investigations do. Was it local law enforcement that had made the mistakes or was there something to it?” he asked. “Was there other types of things that we need to be analyzing are looking at, providing analysis.”
Continuing their conversation, Bolduan expressed her discomfort at even pursuing the line of questioning.
“I’m just so uncomfortable with even having [this conversation,]” the anchor said.
“I’m uncomfortable with having to say it, trust me, my whole point is that I would like to look at this and say, where was the mistake made? How can we correct it in the future? Why was this actually done? But I think that this does warrant a J13 type of commission. And actually look at it and say, let‘s investigate and find out why this happened.”
Combat veteran Sean Parnell posted a similar take on X.
“Everyone needs to see this photo to appreciate the tactical negligence that occurred during the assassination attempt on DJT,” he wrote. “This photo was taken just minutes before the first shots were fired. DJT is oriented towards the shooter at this point. Look in the upper left of this photo. That is the building. Look how f***ing close it was. Direct line of sight to DJT. You can see my wife & I to the right of the SS agent in the front row. There is no excuse to not have someone on that roof. None. It amounts to the most stunning incompetence & negligence in a tactical situation that I have ever been a part of. Ever. It’s simply incomprehensible to me how this happens. The only thing that is more incomprehensible to me is how the Director of the Secret Service still has a job.”
