A former top New York City prosecutor who is advising Special Counsel Jack Smith on his investigations into former President Donald Trump has gifted top Democrats with campaign donations, including President Joe Biden, records reveal.
Smith, who has thus far indicted Trump for challenging the 2020 election and for his involvement with the notorious Jan. 6 events at the Capitol, is being advised by several veteran attorneys, according to the Washington Examiner, one of whom is David Rody.
Rody ditched his role as partner at Sidley Austin, a major American multinational law firm, in 2022 and rejoined the Department of Justice as a senior counsel in the criminal division — he is a former DOJ prosecutor and ABC News reported that he “left his high-paid private job” to work as “an adviser on the widening Trump-related probes.”
The Examiner notes that Rody “gave $5,600 to Biden’s 2020 campaign and almost $7,000 to other Democratic causes from 2018 to 2022, according to campaign finance disclosures.”
The news follows a report that U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, an Obama appointee who was assigned to Trump’s election-related case, has ties to Hunter Biden and was the “toughest punisher” of Jan. 6th defendants.

Chutkan “contributed roughly $4,300 to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and victory fund combined between 2008 and 2012,” according to the Washington Examiner.
Given the mounting evidence that the DOJ has been weaponized against the Biden administration’s opponents, the Rody revelation is likely to raise more Republican eyebrows over what many claim is a partisan approach to Smith’s investigations.

In June, The Examiner reports, Rody “also steered $1,000 to the campaign for Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), who was lead counsel in the first impeachment inquiry against Trump.”
“He also gave $500 in 2019 to the failed-presidential campaign for now-Vice President Kamala Harris and $2,250 combined to Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) presidential and Senate reelection campaigns, according to disclosures,” the outlet states.
And they aren’t the only ones surrounding Smith who have backed Democrats.
“Karen Gilbert, one of the lead attorneys also on the special counsel team, is a Biden and Obama donor, records show,” according to The Examiner. “Some Republicans have also pointed out that Smith’s wife donated to Biden.”
Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for Make America Great Again Inc., a pro-Trump super PAC, isn’t surprised that Biden donors are involved with Smith’s investigations.
“Jack Smith and his gang of henchmen are dishonest, partisan hacks acting as enforcers for Joe Biden and the Democrat Party,” Leavitt told the Washington Examiner. “It’s no surprise that several of his prosecutors are Biden donors.”
Meanwhile, in Georgia, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat has vowed that, should Trump be indicted in the Peach State, he will force the former president to pose for a coveted mugshot.
“Unless somebody tells me differently, we are following our normal practices, and so it doesn’t matter your status,” Labat said at a press conference on Tuesday. “We’ll have a mug shot ready for you.”
