Jack Smith asks to schedule new Trump trial date for a week before the GOP convention

Special counsel Jack Smith has proposed a new trial date for his case against former President Donald J. Trump on the alleged mishandling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

With his case on trumped-up charges involving Trump’s role in the so-called “insurrection” on January 6, 2021, in limbo, the Biden regime’s ruthless legal henchman may not be able to legally lynch the GOP frontrunner before the election in a Soviet-style show trial in a Washington, D.C. courtroom.

But the former Hague chief prosecutor may still be able to get his way on the classified documents trial and is asking a federal judge to start the Florida trial on July 8, a week before the Republican National Convention where Trump is expected to be formally nominated.

In a Thursday filing, Smith submitted the new date for the trial which was originally scheduled to begin on May 20 but is expected to be delayed by Judge Aileen Cannon of the Southern District of Florida where Trump will be tried.

Trump’s lawyers have contended that a “fair trial cannot be conducted this year in a manner consistent with the Constitution.”

This year’s convention is slated to be held from July 15-18 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisc., where barring unforeseen circumstances, Trump will be chosen as the Republican Party standard bearer for the third consecutive time in a miraculous political comeback.

Smith’s request comes the day after he was dealt another setback by the Supreme Court which agreed to hear Trump’s argument that he enjoyed presidential immunity at the time of the chaos at the Capitol and should not be charged as a result.

Leftists blew their stacks after the nation’s highest court agreed to take up the case after a federal appeals court ruled against Trump earlier this month, the latest delay in the marquee lawfare case against the former president, further throwing Smith off his timeline.

“Legal Scholars are extremely thankful for the Supreme Court’s Decision today to take up Presidential Immunity. Without Presidential Immunity, a President will not be able to properly function, or make decisions, in the best interest of the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the Supreme Court announcement.

“Presidents will always be concerned, and even paralyzed, by the prospect of wrongful prosecution and retaliation after they leave office. This could actually lead to the extortion and blackmail of a President. The other side would say, ‘If you don’t do something, just the way we want it, we are going to go after you when you leave office, or perhaps even sooner,’” he said.

Smith has also reportedly moved to prevent Trump’s attorneys from asking jurors about their political affiliation in the Florida trial.

According to a report by the Washington Examiner, “Smith’s team asked Cannon to strike questions involving whether a juror is registered to vote, if the juror is registered with a specific party, and if the juror voted in the 2020 election. Each question requires a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer under the structure proposed by Trump’s team.”
