Former President Donald J. Trump could be kneecapped when the primary season kicks off early next year, at least if Jack Smith has anything to say about it with his proposed date for the January 6 trial that could keep the GOP frontrunner off the campaign trail for most of the early contests.
On Thursday, prosecutors from Smith’s office filed papers in a Washington, D.C. federal court seeking a trial date of January 2, 2024, saying that the date serves the public interest and protects Trump’s rights by giving his legal team adequate preparation time for what will likely be the greatest legal circus since the O.J. Simpson trial.
A “January 2 trial date would vindicate the public’s strong interest in a speedy trial — an interest guaranteed by the Constitution and federal law in all cases, but of particular significance here, where the defendant, a former president, is charged with conspiring to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election, obstruct the certification of the election results, and discount citizens’ legitimate votes,” the filing said, according to NBC News.

Prosecutors expect the trial to run from four to six weeks which would severely impact Trump’s ability to compete for the Republican Party nomination, keeping him tied up in court from the Iowa Caucuses through the early primary states and possibly Super Tuesday if it runs over.
Trump reacted to Smith’s latest underhanded move, blasting the proposed date as election interference in a post to his Truth Social platform.
“Deranged Jack Smith has just asked for a trial on the Biden Indictment to take place on January 2nd., just ahead of the important Iowa Caucuses. Only an out of touch lunatic would ask for such a date, ONE DAY into the New Year, and maximum Election Interference with IOWA! Such a trial, which should never take place due to my First Amendment Rights, and massive BIDEN CORRUPTION, should only happen, if at all, AFTER THE ELECTION. The same with other Fake Biden Indictments. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!” Trump wrote.

Once Smith’s trial is done, Trump will quickly find himself bogged down in more legal quicksand with George Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s trial in the Stormy Daniels “hush money” case scheduled to commence in late March, further complicating his bid for the GOP nomination by tying him up through the late primaries as well.
Trump blasted President Joe Biden over the indictments against him in another Thursday blast from Truth Social.
“These Fake Indictments against me didn’t come down from heaven, they came from the most corrupt President in the history of the United States, Crooked Joe Biden, in order to Rig & Steal another Election,” he wrote. “They shouldn’t even be allowed to go forward. They are all about Election Interference and getting even with the Republicans for the Congressional Hearings currently taking place that show Joe Biden is a CROOK!”
