Jake Tapper summarizes Biden coverup as ‘even worse than Watergate’ after his ‘sudden awakening’

Invoking Watergate, CNN’s Jake Tapper expressed how he sees the cover-up of then-President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline as “maybe even worse.”

The promotional tour for “Original Sin” continued as Tapper and co-author Alex Thompson of Axios dipped another toe into the water of media that actually called out the self-evident failings in the president’s mental faculties. Following an interview with SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly, the duo appeared on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” where they spoke to the size of the scandal and aides’ abilities to “rationalize anything.”

During the lengthy discussion, Piers Morgan brought up a line from the end of the book and quoted, “Joe Biden is not Richard Nixon. The hiding and the cover-up of his deterioration is not Watergate.”

To that, Tapper added, “The next line is, ‘It is an entirely separate scandal.’ It is without question — and may be even worse than Watergate in some ways because Richard Nixon was in control of his faculties when he was not drinking.”

The CNN host noted that the references to Watergate were to compare how “presidents get surrounded by people who have a vested interest in keeping that president propped up … It’s not Watergate. This is an entirely separate scandal; maybe even worse … maybe even worse.”

In shifting blame away from corporate media, a main premise of the narrative sold has been that journalists were just as much victims as the American people since insiders at the Biden White House were faulted for covering for the president — despite the litany of gaffes, erroneous statements, stumbles and senior moments that had been on display well before the 2022 midterms.

“He just had to win, and then he could disappear for four years. He’d only have to show proof of life every once in a while,” Morgan quoted from the book as Tapper noted that that line from an insider, suggesting the inner circle treated the presidency as an honorific rather than the highest office in the land, was the only line that had been sourced before the 2024 presidential election.

On “Fox News Sunday,” Thompson told host Shannon Bream that the person responsible for that quote went on to tell him, “when you’re voting for a president, you’re voting for the aides around him,” before he himself said, “These aides were not even Senate-confirmed aides. These are White House aides. These were unelected people.”

Thompson further suggested that the ability to “rationalize anything” was linked to sincere beliefs that “Donald Trump was and is an existential threat to democracy.”

Of course, falling short of an apology and instead offering an “acknowledgement” to the American people that he wished he’d “covered the story better,” Tapper saw fit to pivot the unsurprising revelations about Biden’s administration to President Donald Trump by calling for legislation “to mandate that American presidents provide all of their health information under threat of perjury because we can’t be lied to about this sort of thing.”
