Jan 6 cop says ‘closure’ begins with jailing Trump, banning him from 2024 ballot

Former U.S. Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell isn’t sure what it will take for him to get “closure” on the events of January 6, 2021, but he believes kicking former President Donald Trump off the 2024 ballot and, maybe, forcing him to rot in jail might help.

Gonell, author of the cringeworthy-titled upcoming book, “American Shield: The Immigrant Sergeant Who Defended Democracy,” appeared on Friday on SiriusXM radio’s “The Dean Obeidallah Show” and was greeted as a “hero cop” by the host.

“What would be justice in your point of view, for yourself and the other officers who suffered so greatly, and some have taken their own lives — For Donald Trump’s role in this January 6 attack on our Capitol,”  Obeidallah asked.

“Do I hold the former president responsible for what happened? Yes, because he was the president of the United States,” Gonell replied. “He’s the one who told those people to go to the Capitol and incited the crowd.”

“He could as easily — once his adviser, his own daughter, his own chief of staff, told him that the peaceful demonstration that they claimed to have had was getting out of hand, had turned into a riot and people were fighting the police officers — he could have easily said, ‘You know what? This is not what I had in mind. I’m sorry. Y’all need to clear out the Capitol. You need to go home.'”

“And he has so much influence on them that they would have listened, because they did listen to him when he actually did tell them to go home,” he added.

Of course, on January 6th, then-President Donald Trump did call on protesters to “stay peaceful.”

“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country,” he wrote on what was then Twitter. “Stay peaceful!”

In another post, Trump wrote, “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”

“Again, this happened in broad daylight,” Gonell continued. “An attack on his own government, because Biden was still not sworn in, so it is an attack on his own government.”

“When you had the vice president of the United States — his own vice president — the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, the Senate pro tem — all three people in the line of succession to the presidency are in danger,” he said. “Plus, a nuclear code with Mike Pence and his daughter and his wife.”

“If this is not a national security, then what is?” Gonell asked. “I don’t get it, why people continue to make excuses for him. He has been indicted by multiple counts.”

Eventually, he got back to achieving his “closure.”

“To go back to your question, what is closure for me? I don’t know,” he said. “It could be that he is barred from political office and never sets a foot in the White House. It could be he goes to jail. It could be that he loses everything he has because he put everybody else’s lives at risk.”

“So it’s it’s a broad term,” Gonell reasoned. “I think I’m confident enough that I’ll let things play out in the court system and whatever the outcome is. If he’s found not guilty, then so be it. But at least don’t declare that everything is a witch hunt, because not everything is.”
