Johnny Depp claims he has no ‘further need for Hollywood’ after Amber Heard drama lost him work

Actor Johnny Depp evidently no longer has any use for Hollywood and all its trappings after ex-wife Amber Heard’s defamation suit which damaged his reputation, caused him to lose work, and resulted in a boycott that turned his world upside down.

Depp was at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of his new movie “Jeanne du Barry.” It’s his first movie in three years. The press was all over him asking questions about the scandal he endured.

“Did I feel boycotted by Hollywood? Well, you’d have to not have a pulse to feel at that point like this was all just a weird joke,” he candidly answered during a press conference, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Of course, when you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing because of something that’s merely a bunch of vowels and consonants floating in the air… Do I feel boycotted now? No, not at all. But I don’t feel boycotted because I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t feel much further need for Hollywood — I don’t know about you,” he bluntly commented.

Depp was asked to leave the “Harry Potter” spin-off franchise “Fantastic Beasts” over the Amber Heard mess.

On the first full day in front of the press in Cannes, Depp was absent from his cast and crew behind the podium who were there to answer questions about the film. The moderator announced that Depp would make an appearance but that he would be late.

Forty-five minutes later after being stuck in traffic, Depp walked in and received massive applause. The night before, he was the recipient of a 7-minute standing ovation for his performance in the upcoming Maïwenn film. It brought tears to the eyes of the actor.

Depp’s disdain didn’t just extend to Hollywood. He also contended that he’s not interested in the media’s interpretation or characterization of his return to the big screen. In fact, he wanted to know why his return was branded a comeback.

“I’ve had my 17th comeback, apparently. I keep wondering about the word ‘comeback,’ because I didn’t go anywhere,” Depp stated at the press conference. “I live about 45 minutes away.”

“Maybe people stopped calling out of whatever their fear was at the time. But I didn’t go nowhere. I’ve been sitting around. ‘Comeback’ is almost like I’m going to come out and do a tap dance — dance my best and hope you approve. That’s the notion. It’s a bizarre mystery,” he commented.

“It’s a very strange, funny time when everyone would love to be themselves, but they can’t because they must fall in line with the person in front of them,” Depp remarked. “If you want to follow that line, be my guest. I’ll be on the other side.”

Throngs of fans met Depp as he arrived at the famous festival. Some were brandishing signs that said “Viva Johnny” and “Congrats Johnny.”

Depp also smacked press coverage of his personal life and court drama, telling everyone, “The majority of you who have been reading for the last five or six years, with regards to me and my life — the majority of what you’ve read is fantastically, horrifically written fiction. The fact is, we’re here to talk about the film. But it’s like asking the question, ‘How are you doing?’ But what’s underneath in the subtext is, ‘God, I hate you.’ That’s the sort of media thing.”

When asked by a Variety reporter what he would say to those who think he should not attend Cannes due to his legal battle, Depp again didn’t hold back.

“What if one day they did not allow me — under no circumstances, no matter what — [that] I cannot go to McDonald’s for life because somewhere if you got them all in one room it’d be 39 angry people watching me eat a Big Mac on a loop just for fun,” he posited. “Who are they? Why do they care? Some kind of species, some tower of mashed potatoes, covering the light on their computer screen. Anonymous. With apparently less free time. I don’t think we should be worried. People should really think about what it’s all about. Really.”
