Jonathan Turley: Swalwell facilitated ‘alleged federal crime’ in helping with Hunter Biden PR stunt

Hunter Biden might not be the only one allegedly guilty as a prominent legal scholar pegged a congressman complicit in facilitating an “alleged federal crime.”

Wednesday, the son of President Joe Biden defied a congressional subpoena with a major PR stunt attempting to dictate his own terms for testimony to legislative committees seeking answers on his foreign business dealings and alleged influence-peddling from then-Vice President Joe Biden.

Not only was California Rep. Eric Swalwell present for the spectacle, but he was later found to be instrumental in making it happen, a point George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley asserted meant, “Swalwell did not simply facilitate a crime, he went out of his way to associate himself with it.”

“It was a curious role for a former House impeachment manager to assist in the obstruction of an impeachment inquiry,” the professor remarked on X. “Swalwell previously argued that anyone refusing to appear should be prosecuted and that GOP members should [be] expelled for supporting the violation of federal law.”

The commentary came as part of a broader op-ed composed for The Hill wherein Turley spoke to the California lawmaker’s involvement in arranging the younger Biden’s press conference outside the U.S. Capitol when he was supposed to be meeting for closed-door testimony with House Oversight Committee Chairman Kentucky Rep. James Comer (R).

“We later learned that Swalwell was not there simply as a pedestrian, but as a participant. It was Swalwell who helped orchestrate the defiance of his own House and facilitated an alleged federal crime,” the opinion piece read.

“Swalwell surely knew that he was helping Hunter in defying a subpoena and obstructing the investigation into Joe Biden. He not only helped set up the press conference but made sure that he was in the camera frame behind Hunter for every network audience,” wrote Turley. “He presumably utilized congressional staff to assist in this effort.”

“In taking these actions, Swalwell encouraged and facilitated the contempt of Congress. While his conduct may not warrant a criminal charge, it certainly warrants action from the House,” he added.

During the conference, Biden had contended, “I’m here today to answer at a public hearing any legitimate questions Chairman Comer and the House Oversight Committee may have for me. I’m here today to make sure that the House committee’s illegitimate investigations of my family did not proceed on distortions, manipulated evidence and lies.”

He also coaxed the transitioning narrative away from claims that he and his father had never discussed his business to now stating, “as clearly as I can: My father was not financially involved in my business, not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not my investment at home or abroad, and certainly not as an artist.”

On Swalwell, Turley noted the congressman’s own record speaking out against actions like the orchestrated event, “Indeed, in 2021 Swalwell sponsored a resolution exploring whether dozens of Republican colleagues could be expelled under the 14th Amendment for aiding and abetting an insurrection by ‘making unsubstantiated claims of systemic election and voter fraud.'”

Further, he cited Swalwell’s own remarks from 2018 when calling for contempt of former White House adviser to then-President Donald Trump Steve Bannon, “If they don’t force him to answer legitimate questions, they will be ceding Congress’ authority, and we’ll be setting a very, very dangerous precedent that people can just tell Congress what they will and will not answer, and will show no resolve to use our subpoena power to get to the bottom of what’s going on.”

As syndicated radio host Mark Levin put it amidst growing calls for the congressman to be held in contempt, “Communist China’s favorite sleaze ball, Swalwell, appears to have conspired with Hunter to commit a felony, obstructing Congress. Expel him.”
