With rumors swirling about discontent and disarray in the office of Vice President Kamala Harris, and amid announcements from top-level staffers that they are jumping ship, one team member took to social media to assure the world that he, at least, is doing fine.
But David Gins, Deputy Director for Operations for the vice president, succeeded not in quelling concerns about working for Harris, but in sparking thoughts that he posted what looked like a hostage photo.
“Hi. My name is David Gins. I work for Vice President Harris on behalf of the American people as Deputy Director for Operations and absolutely love my job,” Gins tweeted Sunday, captioning a photo of himself sitting at his desk.
“Just thought some of you should know,” he added, in what appeared to be an attempt to defend the vice president amid a staff exodus which many have attributed to her management style and her shaky future as the successor for President Joe Biden.

Harris’s chief spokesperson and senior adviser, Symone Sanders, announced last week that she is leaving at the end of the month as did communications director Ashley Etienne, along with other staffers who have, in recent weeks, exited.
And while the departures have come at a time when Harris is trailing Biden in his own cratering approval ratings, some of the vice president’s team have taken to social media in an attempt to put out the fires.
I am truly blessed to work with such a kind, thoughtful, and devoted group of people! Thank you to everyone who made yesterday super special including our amazing @VP!! https://t.co/WXqhUfvU20

But the tweet from Gins on Sunday provoked more mockery online than sympathy, as Twitter users questioned just about everything about the photo and the assertion that he is happy on the job.

This feels like a forced tweet from someone being held against their will in a toxic work environment secretly wanting to escape the sinking ship. https://t.co/HObqUc8T6a
