The COVID-19 lab leak theory became fashionable once more over the weekend, but despite efforts by corporate media and leftist politicians to blame China for “hundreds of thousands dead” while dismissing surprise, receipts told a different story.

Natural or man-made, then-President Donald Trump was excoriated for referring to COVID as the “China Virus” and even credentialed experts were decried as conspiracy theorists for suggesting the origin was a virology lab in Wuhan, China conducting gain-of-function research. A new report from The Wall Street Journal revealed that the U.S. Department of Energy had joined the FBI in support of the lab leak theory based on “new intelligence” and suddenly, as though 15 days to slow the spread were only yesterday, the settled science was back to being a debatable topic.
“There’s this updated classified intelligence report that says the U.S. Department of Energy has assessed that the source of the COVID-19 pandemic likely came from a lab leak in China,” CNN’s Jim Acosta said to guest Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) Sunday. “Very notable here, sources at the Department of Energy tell CNN that the report has, quote, ‘low confidence.’ What’s your reaction to that?”
“I mean, look, I’m not entirely surprised,” the congressman said. “The Chinese have mishandled COVID at every step of the way, trying to sweep it under the rug, trying to try a strategy of zero COVID that utterly failed. And tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of Chinese are dead as a result of the mismanagement of this pandemic by the Chinese Communist Party.”
“So, for it to come out that the whole thing started because of mismanagement, I mean, look, we need to see whether this is true, but if it is,” he argued, “I don’t find it surprising at all.”
Moulton’s response was matched by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan who had appeared earlier on CNN’s “State of the Union” to take the position that President Joe Biden and Democrats were not sold on, but open to the idea of the lab leak theory, and that administration was going to take a wait and see approach before they chose a side that would be politically beneficial.

The spin couldn’t refute the years-long trail left behind in the wake of corporate media peddling a one-sided narrative and threads with healthy reminders began cropping up in due course to show exactly what lengths had been taken to squelch the notion COVID had anything but a natural origin.

The ire felt by those who should be vindicated by the DoE report was palpable as others pointed out that the crux of the matter wasn’t whether or not the lab leak was confirmed, but the fact that it had been dismissed outright while anyone who suggested the possibility was labeled a quack.
Because the response from "experts" wasn't "We believe the evidence points to this being a natural mutation and here is why…", it was a reflexive character attack on anyone who even bothered to ask if the question was still open.

It feels like it’s become a habit of the left to believe something for ideological reasons but claim it’s because of science and then use whatever means are at their disposal to suppress disagreement. https://t.co/VwNFvAP66n

Worse still, and a critical point as investigations are conducted about the government’s response to COVID on Capitol Hill, Dr. Anthony “The Science™” Fauci knew full well the lab leak was possible from the beginning and worked tirelessly to ridicule the idea.
Never forget that scientists told Dr. Fauci at the beginning of the pandemic the virus looked engineered and he then publicly covered up the lab leak theory, and was thanked for it by Peter Daszak from EcoHealth Alliance, the company through which Fauci's NIH funded the Wuhan lab pic.twitter.com/5BB2xr6UFd
