Lawmaker sounds the alarm on rise in antisemitic TikTok content: ‘Digital fentanyl’

TikTok is Chinese-sponsored “digital fentanyl,” according to Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), and the “hate” that is being “spewed” against Jewish Americans on the platform marks a disturbing trend in the Chinese Communist Party’s divisive, anti-American propaganda.

“The hate we’re seeing spewed against Jewish Americans on TikTok should remind us of the basic facts: And the fact is that this app, which increasingly young Americans get their news from this app, this is the source of news and could become the dominant news platform in America, is controlled by a Chinese company that is at the behest of the Chinese Communist Party,” Gallagher told Martha MacCallum on Thursday’s episode of “The Story” on Fox News.

“And if you don’t think the Chinese Communist Party could or would weaponize that platform to spread anti-American propaganda, to divide Americans against Americans, to increase division in this country,” Gallagher stated, “then you’re not paying attention to what they’ve been doing all around the world.”

Jewish influencer Eitan Bernath, who boasts 2.3 million followers on the platform, addressed the issue in a “Dear TikTok” video.

“TikTok is not safe for Jewish creators and users,” he said.

He and other Jewish influencers, including Hollywood figures like Judy Gold and Amy Schumer, penned an open letter to TikTok “calling out the rampant antisemitism on this platform,” Bernath said.

Jewish content creators, he said, are left in “digital and physical danger.”

“This is not just about, like, our feelings aren’t hurt. We’re not upset that people don’t like Jews and don’t like us,” Bernath said. “We are concerned and validly concerned for our digital safety and our physical safety. You know, people have gotten their phone numbers doxxed, their family members doxxed, their addresses doxxed… People have been receiving – like myself – death threats.”

“In response to an inquiry from ‘America Reports,'” Fox News reported, “TikTok said they’ve taken ‘important steps to protect our community and prevent the spread of hate, and we appreciate ongoing, honest dialog and feedback as we continually work to strengthen these protections.'”

Gallagher warned of what could happen if TikTok continues to gain popularity in America.

“Just recently, Chinese tech companies literally wiped Israel off the map, refusing to show the state of Israel on a map,” he said. “That’s a taste of what could happen if we allow TikTok to continue its ascendence here in America.”

Momentum for a Congressional ban on the app has stalled, he said, “because the Senate effort to take action was too broadly drawn.”

“It was viewed as a grant of authority to the Executive Branch,” he explained.

The other reason for the delay, he said, is “because TikTok spent millions on a lobby effort to lull members of Congress into inaction.”

“This,” he said of the antisemitic trend, “should be a call to action though.”

Gallagher stressed the need for the United States to support Israel, describing President Biden’s call for a pause as “counter-productive.”

“We need to not lose our nerve in this case and we need to continue to back our ally, particularly as we know Hamas has plenty of allies in the United Nations,” he said. “They have plenty of allies in American universities. All the more reason why we need to be working together and not lose our nerve.”

“There’s no question that the Democratic Party is divided,” Gallagher later said. “The president’s initial rhetoric on this has been good. I’m glad the White House wants to support Israel. I stand ready to work with him on that.”

“If the left grows in their influence and if they continue to argue against Israel and if what we’re seeing on college campuses spills out into the mainstream in Capitol Hill, it’s a huge problem,” the lawmaker cautioned. “I hope the president will continue his steadfast support of Israel.”
