Pitting the vice president against former President Donald Trump found comedian Bill Maher chiding the Democratic Party’s nominee as worse in one particular area.
“I feel like it’s more insulting…”
Since Trump entered the political arena, his challenge to fake news and the biases portrayed by corporate media left him persona non grata among politburo pundits. Now, as Vice President Kamala Harris had secured the nomination, her near complete stonewalling of the friendly press had the HBO host weighing her treatment as potentially worse.
Joined by CNN host Kaitlan Collins, the host of “Real Time with Bill Maher” raised the vice president’s refusal to entertain interview requests in the weeks since she’d replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket as an insult to media members of all stripes.
“What do you think about the fact that Kamala doesn’t talk to the press? In a way, I feel like it’s more insulting than what Trump does,” said Maher. “And Trump says you’re the enemy of the people, which is pretty bad. What she’s kind of saying is, I don’t need you, and I’m not talking to you, you don’t matter, you’re not relevant anymore.”
“To me, that’s even worse than I hate you,” he added. “It’s like, I don’t think about you.”
Collins, who had appeared surprised during a recent appearance on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert to find the audience considered her network’s supposed objectivity a joke, at first steered clear of the heart of the question akin to Harris avoiding unscripted moments.
“I don’t know if it’s worse than denigrating the press on a daily basis, which is what Donald Trump did,” she argued. “I mean, I covered him in the White House every day as a correspondent, and oftentimes, to kind of shake you if you were asking him a question, he would try to get into a personal argument with you or just deny or lie about what you were asking about.”
After her slight against the president, Collins offered an almost passing acknowledgment to Harris’ avoidance of questions as she said, “And so, I don’t know if I would compare the two. I do think she should talk to the press. I think anyone who wants to have access to the nuclear codes should be willing to sit down and take questions. And we’d love to have her on the show.”
“I’d love to too. But I’m not gonna hold my breath,” added the host as his guest stated, “We’ll see who gets her first.”
To that, Maher suggested, “Well, I think she’ll do you before she does me.”
Harris had previously suggested that her team was working on scheduling an interview before the end of the month but had yet to make any official announcements on when it might be as well as with what outlet as Trump continues to hold regular interviews and conduct press conferences.
