Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was the second black justice to sit on the high court, after Thurgood Marshall, but he is not celebrated on the left because of his conservative views.
In fact, he is often criticized by intolerant liberals, as seen this week in Chicago, when Mayor Brandon Johnson took a potshot at Thomas for not basing his rulings on the color of his skin.
A reporter asked the radical left Democrat about Judicial Watch suing the city over its “discriminatory” reparations task force, citing Thomas.
“When you said it wouldn’t just benefit blacks, especially foundational black Americans, doesn’t deviation from recently supported case law to institutions of higher learning, where Clarence Thomas laid out a legislative package, make the program unnecessarily vulnerable, status by race versus status by injured class?” the reporter asked.
“Yeah, I’m not aware of anything that Clarence Thomas has ever done that has benefited black people,” Johnson replied.
Johnson was so proud of the insult, he shared the exchange on social media:

“I just told you,” the reporter responded.
“I mean, you just read something, but there’s no evidence that anything that the Justice has ever done on behalf of the interests of black people, or even marginalized people in general,” the mayor shot back.
“But as far as any lawsuit against the city of Chicago as it relates to reparations, the whole point of reparations is to repair the harm that was done to Black folks,” he continued. “That’s what it’s designed to do. As you might know, the Department of Justice, under the leadership of Donald Trump, is also suing the city of Chicago because of our efforts to right the wrongs of the past, particularly as it relates to descendants of slaves.”
“They can’t have it both ways,” Johnson said. “They can’t accuse the city of Chicago of focusing solely on black folks while at the same time trying to make a claim that we’re doing the opposite of that.”
Here’s a sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
The guy is doing his job as a member of SCOTUS, his job isn’t to cater to black people. Good to see you have very little understanding of how the government functions

So weird of you to say at a press conference how ignorant you are.
Weirder still to crow about it from your socials as if it makes you look better.
History will judge you harshly.

Yes, a man who was born in a home with no indoor plumbing, then raised by his grandparents, and goes on to become a Justice of the Supreme Court – that could not possibly be an inspiration to the Black community.

Saying Clarence Thomas has “done nothing” ignores the reality of Black excellence. You can disagree with his rulings without erasing his journey, discipline, and historic impact. Black people don’t all have to think the same to matter.
