Media celebrates Obama winning Emmy for narrating Netflix doc: ‘Halfway to an EGOT’

Former President Barack Obama continues to rack up the awards from his adoring base, as he won an Emmy Award over the weekend to add to a crowded trophy case that already features two Grammys and a Nobel Peace Prize.

On Saturday, Obama won the best narrator category for his work on the Netflix documentary series, “Our Great National Parks,” a five-part show featuring national parks from around the globe that is produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, “Higher Ground,” according to CBS News.

“Barack Obama is halfway to an EGOT,” the network touted, this being the rarified achievement of having won all four of the major entertainment awards, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. As CBS News noted, only 17 people have done it. That list includes Whoopi Goldberg and John Legend, meaning the bar may not be as high as one might imagine.

Well, at least we now know what the goal is here.

Obama was gifted the Nobel Peace Prize for little more than being elected, given that nominations for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize closed 11 days after he took office. As for the Grammy Awards, Obama won in the “Best Spoken Word Album” category for his audiobook reading of his memoirs “Dreams from My Father”‘ in 2006, and “The Audacity of Hope” in 2008. In the event you’re not picking up on a trend here, Michelle Obama also “won” a Grammy for reading her audiobook in 2020.

In winning the Emmy, Obama joins former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was given a special Emmy Award in 1956, as the only presidents to do so. Netflix was quick to note that Obama was “the first President to win a competitive Emmy.”

Suffice it to say, those not engaged in a slobbering love affair with Obama were not so impressed… here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
