Melania Trump makes history with her UN speech

First Lady Melania Trump has made history with her speech urging “peace through education.”

On Monday, she presided over the United Nations Security Council meeting, marking the first time the first lady of any country has done so. In her speech, she said the United States “stands with all of the children throughout the world,” and encouraged a “peace through education” approach. This comes as the U.S. has engaged in strikes on Iran alongside Israel, which have successfully eliminated the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“The U.S. stands with all of the children throughout the world,” Melania Trump said in her speech. “I hope soon — peace will be yours.”

“Collectively, your mission to maintain security while upholding the responsibility of preventing conflict during times of both war and peace is significant, must be applied evenly, and should never be carried out lightly,” she added, addressing the 15 member states that make up the council. “Peace does not need to be fragile.”

China, France, the Russian Federation, the United States, and the United Kingdom make up the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. There are also 10 members serving in a temporary capacity after being elected to 2-year terms: Liberia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Bahrain, Greece, Colombia, Panama, Somalia, Latvia, and Denmark.

“A nation that makes learning sacred protects its books, its language, its science, and its mathematics — it protects its future. This leads to something powerful — to greater understanding, moral reasoning, and tolerance of others. Peace,” the first lady said as her speech maintained its focus on holding education sacred, saying it “shapes the core of their country’s belief system.”

She added that bringing children up in a culture that reveres intelligence helps them “develop confidence, innovate, build, compete, and maintain a deep value system.”

“Their knowledge fosters empathy for others, transcending geography, religion, race, gender, and even local norms. They become caring people.”

Meanwhile, countries that ignore this and decide to bring up their youth in a culture “rooted in ignorance are surrounded by disorder, and sometimes even conflict.”

“These societies are filled with rigid thinkers who embrace prejudice and shun human dignity. When a nation restricts thought, it restricts its own future,” she said.

Ultimately, Melania Trump shared that she believes education is a “fundamental right,” lamenting that “so many children and young adults are banned from attending secondary schools and universities.”

“The cost is not abstract. A society that excludes vast segments of its population can realize only a fraction of its potential. Societies ruled by knowledge and wisdom are, therefore, more peaceful.”
