An illegal immigrant from Mexico was arrested for throwing her baby away — literally.
Lucia Garcia, 21, was taken to the Staten Island University Hospital in New York City by her father on May 20 after she complained about not feeling well. While at the hospital, Garcia went into a bathroom and emerged covered in blood. A police officer working security and a cleaning crew member heard the newborn baby’s cries and found him in a trashcan.
Now that she has been charged with two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of acting in a manner injurious to a child, Garcia insists that she didn’t know she was pregnant and that she hadn’t realized she had thrown her baby away, according to the New York Post.
“I thought it was just blood,” she told the newspaper. “I didn’t know I put my baby in the trash until the nurse told me later.”

Garcia, who came to America about 10 months ago and has reportedly applied for asylum, said she was handcuffed to her bed at the hospital and that there was a police officer sitting in the corner of her room.
As for her newborn son, she told the Post she has no idea where he is but now she wants him — citing a source, the paper reported that the baby is still hospitalized and in the custody of the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.
“I don’t know when I’m going to get him back,” she said. “I want him back. I want to take care of him. I just want my baby back.”
The migrant said she met the father of the baby, who lives in Manhattan, on Facebook. He came to visit her on several occasions in the Staten Island room she shares with her father. The man apparently did not know at the time that he was a new father because the police took Garcia’s phone.
“How am I going to tell him when I don’t have any way to contact him?” she asked, before saying her father was planning to find the young man. “He is going to have to pay for all of this.”
