Mom confronted over child wearing only trashbag, diaper arrested, employee fired for ‘just trying to help’

The Mississippi woman who appeared in a viral video being confronted by shoppers over her shivering child dressed only in a diaper and a trash bag has been arrested and charged with neglect.

And the Walmart employee who was “just trying to help” by intervening and posting the video has been fired by the retail giant.

The employee at the Byram area superstore recorded the shocking footage of the woman and the shivering child as she was shopping on a day when temperatures were reportedly 20 degrees outside, with one onlooker calling her out after she threw a bag of frozen food on the poor kid’s legs in the shopping cart.

It is now being reported that the woman, who has been identified as 26-year-old Kambria Gabrielle Darby, was arrested by police who were called to the store on January 17 at around 10:30 a.m.

When police arrived, they found the child, who had been given clothing while still inside the store by shoppers who seemed to show more concern than the mother, “still freezing and shaking from the cold temperatures,” Jackson television station WLBT reported. “Darby was placed in custody and charged with child neglect and her toddler was secured in a warm police unit.”

“First responders evaluated the child’s condition and Child Protective Services responded and ultimately released the child to an approved relative,” the outlet reported.

And showing that no good deed goes unpunished, the Walmart employee who recorded and shared the video to social media has been fired. Felicia Nicole said that she had been terminated after five years of service with the big box retail giant, being let go two hours before her shift ended days later.

“I don’t feel sorry for her, she needs to be in jail… she shouldn’t have done that to her baby,” Nicole told the Daily Mail. “Walmart doesn’t care about their employees! I was only trying to help.”

She was also ordered by Walmart to take down the video of the incident and complied. She later updated her TikTok followers with details.

“Yes, we did call the police. I mean, why wouldn’t we? Why wouldn’t we?'” an emotional Nicole said, according to Daily Mail. “When you see a child that’s being neglected, don’t have on any clothes, just a diaper, no shoes, no socks, no shirt, no nothing. So why wouldn’t we call the police?”

She explained how she would not allow the same treatment for her own child who evidently had died.

“If my child was living, ain’t no way in hell my child would be out there with no clothes on, just a diaper,” she said.

Walmart issued a statement on the incident and its decision.

“We share the concern others have for the child in the video in our store in Jackson, Mississippi. We don’t discuss personnel matters involving current or former associates. All associates are encouraged and empowered to use their judgment in contacting authorities when they see something that may be wrong, however all associates are also expected to follow the Walmart Code of Conduct,” the company said.

In a lengthy Facebook post after she was arrested, Darby not only played the victim but likened herself to Jesus Christ, attaching over 50 photos of her and her children in an apparent attempt to show that she was a good parent.

“This deformation (sic) of character is hurting my heart,” the mother said. “They did Jesus the same way, he felt sick to his stomach as well; he didn’t want to go through it.”

“We go on vacations, indoor water parks, my son takes swim lessons, soccer lessons, tumbling, basketball etc etc, for holidays I go ALL out,” she bragged. “My kids are clean, very clean. Each new pair of shoes that drop they gets them, designer clothes & etc.”

The claims fly in the face of the optics of the video as the youngster sat with no clothes and teeth chattering.

“I haven’t seen my kids since they were taken away from me by CPS. Last night was my first night eating a few crackers since my kids have been gone,” Darby wrote, according to the Daily Mail. “I know this too shall pass. I know one day me and my kids will be reunited.”

As for Nicole, she set up a GoFundMe to help with her bills after the termination of her job and because “I took it upon myself to record it for the child sake.”

“No I wasn’t thinking about the consequences at the time, At that time my main focus was on that innocent poor child, and to get him some help,” she wrote. “‘Now I’m jobless because I was only trying to help and save that baby life.”

She updated the fundraising page with heartfelt thanks after donations amounted to over $29,000, far surpassing her $5,000 goal.
