MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart offered up a remarkable theory Saturday during a discussion with journalist Errin Haines, which is that people criticize Vice President Kamala Harris because they are “afraid of her.”
“The criticisms of the vice president have been coming at her since she was picked by Joe Biden to be his running mate,” Capehart said. “My question is are they doing it not because they think she’s incompetent but because they know her potential and they are afraid of her.”
Haines fulfilled the role she plays in the political process, which is to blame racist white males for any criticism of Harris, who has consistently polled poorly as vice president.
“I think, you know, because the vice president is in a historic role, a lot of times you have a political press that is frankly white and male and that is used to covering politicians that don’t look like Vice President Harris,” she opined. “This is leadership that is hard for them to understand.”
In pointing out that the vice president’s role is not something that people traditionally pay attention to, the journalist assured viewers that Harris is just beginning to hit her stride.
“And yet, because she is somebody that is doing this for the first time as somebody who is a black woman, we are — that does draw increased scrutiny, I think took to the role,” she continued. “I think we’ve increasingly seen her showing up and doing the job. She’s been more visible. You’ve seen her kind of honing her message. And and so I think that is drawing more and more attention to her, especially as we head into 2024.”
Ironically, the discussion reduces the value Harris brings to the table to the color of her skin which is precisely why she was tapped to be Biden’s running mate after she bombed out in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
Speaking of ironies, her high point in the race was when she confronted Biden about his early opposition to federal busing policies. Harris steadily dropped in the polls over the summer and fall of 2019 and dropped out in December before a single vote had ever been cast.
