With a government shutdown looming, Speaker Kevin McCarthy is under a lot of pressure to pass a short-term funding measure but is feeling even more pressure from some members of his own caucus to live up to the promises he made to gain their vote to lead the House.
The group is headed up by U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who dangles the threat of a motion to vacate the chair to push McCarthy to keep his word on balanced budgets, term limits, and single-subject spending bills.”
And while U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is not entirely in that camp, she made it clear that she was “very unhappy” with McCarthy during an appearance on Fox News’ “America Reports.”
Anchor John Roberts asked, “Are you happy with the job that Speaker McCarthy is doing?”
“I would say, I would put me in the column of being very frustrated,” Mace replied. “I don’t like feeling like I was misled or lied to on particular pieces of legislation.”

“I’ve worked very hard to show a road map and a pathway for women, for Republican women, how we can move forward and win suburban women over next year,” she continued. “I’ve worked on a number of pieces of legislation that has fallen on deaf ears, has been ignored, no matter the promises that I was made by the leadership. So, put me in the very unhappy column today.”
The GOP lawmaker said “it’s 50-50″ on whether McCarthy is challenged, but denounced the federal debt topping $33 trillion this week.
“Democrats and Republicans put us in this place,” Mace said. “Our debt hit $33 trillion today. That sham of a debt ceiling deal three months ago is going to add almost $20 trillion to debt over the next 10 years. And so, if neither side is willing to address the problem, the spending problem we have today, we’re just going to get the same thing we’ve always gotten: just spending our kids’ future into oblivion and we can’t afford to do that.”
Mace appeared over the weekend on ABC’s “This Week,” and she commented on the possibility of Gaetz attempting to force McCarthy out of the speaker role.
“It hasn’t happened yet, and I am not going to comment on conjecture here,” she told anchor Jonathan Karl. “Either he is going to file it or he’s not. If he’s going to do it, put his money where his mouth is.”
McCarthy reportedly fired back in a closed-door GOP conference last week, telling his detractors: “If you want to file a motion to vacate, then file the f*cking motion.”
Mace told Karl “everything is on the table.”
“We’ll see how it turns out, but I will tell you, I’m one of those members who were made certain promises,” she said. “I’ve worked on women’s issues. I’ve worked on issues you know, related to gun violence, that I feel are very important. And you know, it’s fallen on deaf ears. And if I give a handshake to someone, I expect them to follow through.”
